India’s first match against Bangladesh in the Super 4 stage of the 2018 Asia Cup at Dubai International Cricket Stadium panned out to be a one-sided affair as the Men in Blue won by seven wickets. While the Men in Blue emerged triumphant in three matches on a row, the Tigers couldn’t recollect themselves after their defeat against Afghanistan at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi the other night.

Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bowl first after which Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah picked up Liton Das and Nazmul Hossain respectively. Shakib Al Hasan played some impressive strokes but fell prey to Ravindra Jadeja. Mohammad Mithun became Jadeja’s second victim. Mushfiqur Rahim played a horrendous stroke and gave Jadeja his third wicket.

Mahmudullah and Mosaddek Hossain tried hard by putting on 36 runs, but both succumbed one over after the other and Bangladesh were well and truly staring down the barrel. Nevertheless, Mashrafe Mortaza and Mehidy Hasan put their heads down and added 66 runs for the eighth wicket. The last three wickets fell for six runs and the Tigers ended with 173 runs.

Rohit guides India to victory

The run-chase wasn’t expected to be troublesome for the Men in Blue. Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan didn’t look in any sort of trouble during their stand of 61 runs from 14.2 overs. Both batters didn’t go berserk but made sure that the scoreboard keeps ticking. Shakib separated them with the wicket of Dhawan by trapping the batsman plumb in front.

On the other hand, Rohit carried on his own merry away and accomplished his second half-century of this year’s multi-nation event. After Dhawan’s dismissal, Ambati Rayudu joined Rohit in the middle and they added 45 more runs. Rubel Hossain found Rayudu’s outside edge to pick India’s second wicket. MS Dhoni and the Indian captain scored the remaining runs without dropping much sweat.

Mashrafe Mortaza, the Bangladeshi captain, said

If you look at the batting, we lost wickets from the start. Against Sri Lanka we lost wickets but had a middle-order partnership that did well. You have to back yourself, it was a decent wicket to bat on. We couldn’t make any partnership today. We could have made 250-260. It might have been a better track for batting later, but 260-270 would have made for a good match. You can’t ask bowlers to defend 170 in a 50 over match, so I think our batsmen have to take more responsibility to build the innings. One match can change everything; we are still in the tournament, and we need to do well against Afghanistan next time. They’re a tough side to beat because of their bowling, but we can definitely beat them if we get 260-270 on the board.

Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain said, said

It was a clinical performance right from the start and restricted them to 170 odd. We always knew it was better batting under lights. It is important on this pitch to rotate bowlers as batsmen get used to the bowlers quickly. Conditions were challenging but our bowling unit responded very well for us. Chahal and Kuldeep have been bowling really well. Jadeja played an ODI after very long time. To come out and play an ODI like this is exceptional. Kuldeep and Chahal will have an odd off game. All the bowlers bowled according to the plan. When everything goes to plan, it looks easy. We always knew that it will never be easy for the new batsmen so we wanted one of the top order batsmen to be till the end. We will go back and recover and come back fresh against Pakistan and try to replicate this performance.

Ravindra Jadeja, the Man of the Match, said

I always wanted to make a mark when I get a chance. Finally, I got a chance today and I am very happy. Kuldeep and Chahal were also bowling well and I was getting wickets at the other end. That’s how bowling goes. I try to perform in every format. I will try to play my role with bat too if opportunity comes against Pakistan.
