The match between Afghanistan and Bangladesh at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi turned out to be a humdinger as both teams threw punches at each other. Eventually, Bangladesh held their nerves and romped to a victory by three runs courtesy of a stupendous final-over from Mustafizur Rahman. In the meantime, Afghanistan crashed out of the 2018 Asia Cup.

Kayes and Mahmudullah guide the Tigers

Mashrafe Mortaza won the toss and elected to bat first and to his agony, Bangladesh lost two early wickets in the form of Mohammad Mithun and Nazmul Hossain Shanto. Liton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim stitched together a stand of 63 runs to inject some momentum into the innings. However, thereafter the Tigers lost Liton, Mushfiqur and Shakib Al Hasan in quick succession.

Shakib and Mushfiqur succumbed to run-outs. Nevertheless, Mahmudullah and Imrul Kayes, who replaced Mosaddek Hossain, bailed them out and put together 128 runs. The pair was separated when Aftab Alam nipped out Mahmudullah, who scored 74 from 81 deliveries, in the 47th over. Kayes remained not out till the very end and Bangladesh ended with a competitive 249/7.

Bangladesh live to fight another day

The run-chase didn’t start on an auspicious note for Afghanistan as Ihsanullah Janat and Rahmat Shah perished early. Nevertheless, Mohammad Shahzad and Hashmatullah Shahidi restored sanity back into the innings with a partnership of 63 runs. In the meantime, the hulk-like Shahzad accomplished his maiden fifty of this year’s Asia Cup but was cleaned up soon after by Mahmudullah.

Asghar Afghan, the skipper, joined Shahidi in the middle and put his head down to take Afghanistan closer to the target. Mortaza removed Afghan after which he accounted for Shahidi’s wicket. The left-hander scored 71 runs in 99 balls. Mohammad Nabi and Samiullah Shenwari dished out some lusty blows, but they weren’t enough for Afghanistan to elude a defeat.
