AUS vs IND, 2020: 1st ODI – Statistical Preview

Sydney Cricket Ground will host India’s return to international cricket after nearly nine months as they take on the hosts Australia on Friday in the first game of the 3-match ODI series. This series will also be India’s first appearance in the ICC ODI Super League for CWC 2023. Australia’s first series in the Super League was against England in England which they ended up winning by 2-1 margin. India, the No.2 ranked ODI team will be taking the field in the absence of Rohit Sharma but can retain their ranking even if they can avoid getting whitewashed.

Only New Zealand (0.09 vs PAK in Sharjah; won 1, lost 11) and England (0.111 vs SL in RPS; won 1, lost 9) have a worse win-loss record in ODIs against an opponent at a venue than India. (Min: 10 matches)

0.357 – India’s win-loss record of 0.357 in the ODI format at the Sydney Cricket ground is the lowest for them at any venue where they played at least ten ODIs. India won five of the 20 ODIs played at the SCG and lost as many as 14 matches while another game ended in a washout. India won all the three ODIs which they played at the SCG against teams other than Australia.

5-0 – Each of the last five matches in the ODI format played at the Sydney Cricket Ground have been won by the teams batting first only. The average first-innings total in those five ODIs read 305 with help of three 300+ totals. The last team to win chasing at the SCG in an ODI was India during the 2016 tour against the hosts during a 331-run chase.

11-2 – Australia has won 11 of their last 15 ODI matches played at the Sydney Cricket Ground. In those 15 games, the Aussies lost only twice (vs India in 2016 and vs England in 2018) while another two matches ended without a result.

801 – David Warner has aggregated a total of 801 runs across 14 innings in ODI cricket at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Warner scored those runs at an average of 57.21 with help of three hundreds and five fifties. Davey has got a 122-run knock and a fifty across the three ODI innings he played against India at the SCG.

288 – India will end their 288-day break from the ODI format on November 27th when they play the first ODI game in Sydney. This is the longest gap between any two ODI matches featuring India in more than four decades. The last instance of India not playing ODIs in a succession of 288 or more days was back in the 1976-1978 period.

India played two ODIs on successive days in February 1976 during their tour of New Zealand and had not played another ODI game until October 1978 (in Pakistan tour). The first ODI will also end India’s 268-day gap without featuring in International cricket which is their biggest such gap since the beginning of 1992.

4983 – Aaron Finch needs 17 more runs to complete 5000 runs in the ODI format. Finch will become the 2nd fastest Australian to 5000 ODI runs if he scores those 17 runs in Sydney.
