The last time Aussies won a Test series in India was over a decade ago in 2004. Team India was done by one of the most feared bowling combinations in cricketing history; Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie. Gillespie who ended up with 20 wickets at the end of the series was in top form.

As the Australia tour of India is approaching fast, the former fast bowler was discussing the current Aussie squad on a podcast for cricket.com.au. He said, “I certainly think they’ll need two slow bowling options in the Test matches. If they can have that third seam bowling option, because I think if they have two seamers, two spinners that’s hard work for those quicks. They’ve got lots of options so I’m quite excited.”

Jason Gillespie also recalled some of the tactics he used during his successful visit to India. “We felt that the Indians, while they’re very good playing off their stumps to the leg-side because they’re very wristy players, we felt if we could look to really attack the stumps — sort of a ‘you miss I hit’ mentality — and block their big boundary options, make them run in the heat, back our skills and fitness to hang in there, be really disciplined with our line and length.

Back then they had the advantage of having someone as skilled and dangerous as spin wizard Shane Warne in their bowling attack. What that did was not only gave them an advantage but also nullified the hosts’ strategy of using spin as a tactic.

“We knew we had the king at the other end, Warney (Shane Warne), so we just rotated, backed our skills to be really ruthless, really disciplined with our line and length, stay patient and wear them down. Fortunately we were able to do that. You need a little bit of luck along the way, but you make your own luck through that hard work. It was a tough tour but it was a great experience and to win that series was a highlight of my career.”

The current Australian squad might not be as good as the squad that last won in India but they are surely up for a fight. The Test series starts on 23rd February at Pune, it will be a test for both the teams as it is the first-ever Test match at the MCA stadium. The pitch there so far has played differently in every match. It will be interesting to see how it pans out for the first Test.
