Australia are keeping no stone unturned ahead of their title defence in the upcoming World Cup. The Kangaroos have already roped in former captain Ricky Ponting as the assistant to their coach Justin Langer. And now, they have announced the appointment of two bowling coaches for the side for the mega tournament as well as the Ashes following it, respectively.

While Adam Griffith, who served as the assistant coach with the Australian team on a tour to the Windies in 2016, has been made the side’s bowling coach for the WC starting May 30, Troy Cooley – who worked as Australia’s bowling coach on Australia’s recent series against India – has been made the bowling coach for the Ashes scheduled in August-September.

Both Griffith, 41, and Cooley, 53, have played first-class cricket for Tasmania with the latter finishing his career earlier owing to seniority. Griffith retired as a player in 2011 and became the head coach of Tasmania in 2017. Cooley, on the other hand, has experience of working in English conditions and also worked as England’s bowling coach earlier.

“We are pleased to announce Adam and Troy have been appointed Bupa Support Team Assistant Coaches for the World Cup and Ashes Series respectively,” Cricket Australia Interim Executive GM, Team Performance, Belinda Clark was quoted as saying by a News18 report.

“We reached out to the coaches working in Australian Cricket and received expressions of interest from a strong field of candidates and through the process, Adam and Troy emerged as the clear standouts for these secondments.”

Clark also said Australia will review the overall coaching structure and decide on the best route of going forward after the completion of the WC and Ashes. The same will be based on the upcoming fixture, players’ requirements and the guidance of Langer.

Wonder additions to team, says Langer

Langer also welcomed the appointment of the duo saying they were ‘wonderful additions’ to the team. The Aussie coach said he has experience of working with Griffith in the past at the Western Australia Cricket Association and has a good impression about the latter as a coach. Both the coaches will officially begin their assignments at the World Cup training camp beginning in May.
