It was a must-win game for Team India, they lost the first T20I at the Gabba and it was their only chance to make a comeback in the series. For the 19 overs of play that was possible, Virat Kohli’s team was certainly the better unit but to no avail as the rain gods had other plans. The first rain intervention happened during the 19th over of the Australian innings and it continued for long enough to force the match to be abandoned.

However, there was a lot of action in the first innings before that. With overcast conditions, Indian skipper Virat Kohli decided to bowl first. The new-ball pair of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Khaleel Ahmed used it their advantage and pitched the ball up. It swung and Bhuvi got the better of Aaron Finch on the very first ball he faced. Khaleel at the other end removed Chris Lynn and D’Arcy Short soon after.

Jasprit Bumrah joined the attack late but immediately got into the party. He got rid of the dangerous Marcu Stoinis and the trouble intensified for the Aussies. Krunal Pandya who along with Khaleel were punished by Lynn and Glenn Maxwell respectively completed the perfect revenge getting the better of the all-rounder.

The left-arm spinner got one to leave the batsman, he played the wrong line and ended up losing his off-stump. Wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey didn’t make a lot of difference to the total either and was Kuldeep Yadav’s first success to be dismissed for 4. At this point, Australia were 74/6 and in all sorts of troubles.

That was not how the Aussies would go down. Nathan Coulter-Nile who was in as a forced replacement for Billy Stanlake smacked a few big shots and along with Ben McDermott got the total past the 100-run mark. He got out on 18 from 9 balls but McDermott was unbeaten on 32 from 30 when rain forced the players to go off the field.

The ground staff worked really hard and tried at least three times to get the players back on but the rain returned just when they were ready to resume. Eventually, the game was called off and Australia hold a 1-0 lead heading into the last T20I at the SCG.
