India’s backs were against the wall when Australia stretched their lead to 286 runs thanks to the 35-run partnership for the last wicket. Though Virat Kohli was pumped up after bundling out the opposition he knew somewhere deep in his mind that batting wasn’t going to be easy by any stretch of the imagination. It was evident straightaway in KL Rahul’s batting as he was unsure about leaving and playing the ball in the very first over.

The Indian opener came in to bat with a sword hanging on his place in the Test side. The uncertainty in his footwork was evident and Mitchell Starc‘s ability to swing the ball into him played on the batsman’s mind too. The same proved to be his undoing as Rahul couldn’t make the decision of whether to leave or play and eventually played on to his stumps bagging yet another duck.

Rahul owns a record in failure

KL Rahul didn’t do much in terms of contributing to the team’s cause but equalled an embarrassing record which is owned by the former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar. Rahul has been getting out bowled quite often in the last few Test matches. This was the seventh instance that his furniture was disturbed in last 11 innings while thrice he has now been dismissed in the same fashion in both the innings of a Test match.

Sunil Gavaskar also bagged this unwanted record but he played 125 Test matches for it. But Rahul who is tipped to be the next big thing in Indian cricket has achieved the feat only in 33 games in his career in whites. This might certainly be the end of his Test career as far as the next few series concerned and Prithvi Shaw is getting fit for the third Test as well.

It will be interesting to see with whom India persists for the remainder of the series. Both Vijay and Rahul have been disappointing but the former at least exudes confidence with his footwork and played more than 60 balls in the second innings. Rahul, on the other hand, is seriously having problems and need to work hard in order to rectify his batting technique now.
