Australian all-rounder Glen Maxwell looks disappointed after he claims that he might have “thrown away” a chance to make his case for the No. 6 spot in Australia’s upcoming Ashes series against England. Maxwell, who was promoted to the No. 3 spot registered scores of 64 and 60 in Victoria’s draw with South Australia at the MCG but was kicking himself for failing to turn one of his twin fifties into a big score.

However, with another round of Shield matches scheduled ahead of the first Ashes Test, which starts on November 23, Maxwell looks upbeat about the opportunity. He said, that for the time being his focus was on shutting out the distractions and performing for Victoria.

The 29-year-old right-hander made a mature hundred at No. 6 on his comeback to the Test side, against India in Ranchi earlier this year. In three Tests since then, however, he has not been able to cross 50 and the selectors have made it clear that he didn’t qualify for an automatic selection for the Ashes.

Speaking to Melbourne’s SEN radio on Wednesday, the dynamic all-rounder revealed, “There is lots of speculation about that No. 6 position and what’s going to happen for that first Ashes Test. I probably threw away two good chances to make hundreds and push my case forward. But I probably also threw away an opportunity to win us the game as well. I’m disappointed I couldn’t do more for the Vics this last game.”

Cartwright, Lehman amongst favourites

After mixed season against India, Australia would be hoping for a turnaround in their fortunes when they take on England in the upcoming Ashes. While the team looks set and well prepped up, the Aussie team management is yet to decide on a No. 6 batsman. For long, they have been devoid of an able and in-form batsman for the spot and with the Ashes closing in, a number of potential contenders have popped up to fill in the void.

Hilton Cartwright, Shaun Marsh, Moises Henriques and Marcus Stoinis are all among the contenders. Head coach Darren Lehman’s son Jake Lehmann also threw his hat in the ring with scores of 103 and 93 for South Australia against Victoria.
