Test cricket this year has been somewhat marred by the infamous ball-tampering scandal. Earlier in March, Steve Smith, David Warner, and Cameron Bancroft were meted with severe punishments by Cricket Australia (CA) and were handed suspensions. Recently another incident on a similar line has panned out when Dinesh Chandimal, the Sri Lankan skipper, has found himself tangled in the serious offense.

He has recently been charged by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for changing the condition of the leather. The Lankans are presently in the West Indies for a three-match Test series. The incident panned out on the second day of the second Test at the Gros Islet Stadium in St Lucia. The umpires suspected something fishy surrounding the shape of the ball.

Another case of adulteration?

Subsequently, they changed the ball, which severely agitated Dinesh Chandimal and his boys. They refused to take the field and play on the third day that got delayed by approximately two hours. Javagal Srinath, former Indian bowler and the match referee for the contest, was seen having heated conversation with the Lankan team management following which play eventually got underway.

The ball was changed and the Windies were awarded 5 penalty runs. The home team finished Day 2 on 118/2 and started Day 3 with 123 runs on the board. Meanwhile, Chandimal has completely denied the charges hurled at him by the world’s apex cricket board for breaching Level 2.2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

Meanwhile, a video footage has recently been released where Chandimal can be seen scrubbing the ball in his pocket for quite a while. Thereafter, he used saliva, which is suspected to contain some sweet element, to shine the leather and then passes the cherry to the bowler. It will now be interesting to find out further revelations pertaining to the matter.
