The announcement of the preliminary squad of Bangladesh for the tri-nation series and the series against Sri Lanka has raised several eyebrows for two particular changes. One is the exclusion of wicketkeeper, Nurul Hasan Sohan and the inclusion of opener, Shadman Islam. Bangladesh national team selector, Minhajul Abedin Nannu recently came up with an explanation for the changes in the squad.

Nannu went on to elaborate that Nurul Hasan Sohan has been dropped for his inconsistent form. He spoke of Sohan’s performances in the National Cricket League (NCL), calling them to comprise the deciding factor. On the other hand, he credited Shadman for having performed well against Ireland in the ‘A’ level games which included a century in the 4-day match, as a result of which he’s found a spot in the 32-member preliminary squad.

Bangladesh National Team Selector explains squad changes

According to bdcrictime.com, the Bangladesh selector said, “The fact about Sohan is that we have taken his NCL performances into account. Many of the wicket-keepers are involved in the competition. We have considered everything to make the decision. It’s not like that he is out of our attention.” Nannu went on to laud Shadman, who has received his maiden national call-up. “He (Shadman) is our HP (High Performance Unit) player. We are in search of openers in longer version cricket. We have seen him doing good enough in longer version games for HP and against Ireland A at home,” said Nannu.

The announced squad consists Anamul Haque, Liton Das and Mohammad Mithun are the other wicket-keepers apart from the regular keeper, Mushfiqur Rahim. While Haque has recently hit a double century in the NCL, it is his second in the season; Mithun ended the tournament as one of the top five run-scorers in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Liton Das, on the other hand, made a lone half-century in the star-studded T20 Tournament.
