Bangladesh tour could well be a sendoff series for Sehwag, Zaheer, Harbhajan and Yuvraj: It has been over a year that Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh formed a part of the India XI. The Indian selectors also chose to take a team of 15 without any of these names to Australia and New Zealand to defend their World Champions status, a title all four of them had substantial contributions to make in acquiring.
But it will be unfair to blame or name anybody for the seniors to be excluded; none of them could notch up exciting performance since the world cup 2011 to maintain their spot’s they quite literally owned. Apart from a few knocks that Yuvraj hit in the domestic season this year and the games that Zaheer Khan has played in the later part of the IPL, they have nothing much to talk about, or showcase in order to stage a comeback.
Since India is scheduled to play Bangladesh following the ongoing season of the IPL, and nobody expects the Board to send in a full-fledged squad, the selectors are believed to be considering this an opportunity to give the senior lot another chance, not to make a comeback, but to graciously bid good bye to international cricket with this series as a mark of respect and gratitude for the services they have extended to Indian cricket for over a decade.
A senior Official from the BCCI was quoted by MAIL TODAY saying though it is a bit too early to confirm anything in particular but it is considered an option to give these players a send off series as they deserve to retire on the field with all the applause and not a silent one that ends with a press conference.
“What they have done for Team India in the past decade will be hard to match. But as is the case with every sport, time does catch up with you. So we are thinking about giving them an opportunity to go to Bangladesh and sign off on a high…. Some people may term it an emotional decision, but so what? But yes, the idea needs the approval of national selectors,” he said.
The BCCI selectors will sit down in Mumbai on the 20th of May to pick the squad for the tour of Bangladesh, where the team will play one test match followed by limited over’s series.
This could well spice things up in Bangladesh, who would have otherwise hosted an A team from India, as the tour is generally considered an opportunity to give those guys a game who usually fail to make a cut into the playing XI. With these 4 expected to star, all of a sudden the one Test and three ODIs series will draw more attention than most would have expected.
The BCCI official also said that there was a possibility that some of them might be selected for the test and a young squad comprising of the emerging talents be picked for the ODIs: “That would depend on the selectors. It could very well be that some of the players are picked just for the Test match while the others are picked for the ODI series.”
