The 41-year-old veteran Indian batsman Wasim Jaffer was approached by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to join the staff as a batting coach. Jaffer tops the list of all-time highest run scorers in the Ranji Trophy with a record 11775 runs amassed throughout his Ranji career. He played a key role in Virdhaba’s consecutive title wins in Ranji Trophy and Irani Cup.

The Vidarbha team legend was in Bangladesh earlier for a couple of weeks to participate in the Dhaka Premier League for Abahani Limited franchise. Apparently, the former Bangladesh cricketer who is also the coach of the said franchise Khaled Mahmud Sujan was impressed after watching the seasoned campaigner at the nets during the tournament.

The director and the game development committee chairman of BCB, Khaled Mahmud was hence eager to blend Jaffer in the setup, as a batting coach. Wasim Jaffer, who has been playing for Vidarbha in the Ranji Trophy for the last few years, is now back in Mumbai. However, he plans to travel to Dhaka in the next couple of weeks to feature in the Super League and supposedly that’s the time the next round of meeting regarding the coaching role could occur.

The exact role hasn’t been finalized yet

However, it still hasn’t settled on whether Wasim Jaffer would be offered the duties of coaching the senior or age-group teams. BCB officials are yet to clarify the roles and responsibilities to Jaffer.  “Yes, they have approached me but it hasn’t materialized yet,” Jaffer told Sportstar on Sunday.

“I don’t know the role yet. Maybe, they would like to give me a go at the national team because it is easier for (us) to relate to sub-continent players. Foreign people don’t have too much idea about sub-continent conditions. It makes sense to get someone who has played cricket here and can help players on how to get used to the things. Let’s see how things go. It’s still in the pipeline,” added the 41-year-old batsman.

Additionally, BCB cricket operations committee chairman and former Bangladesh captain, Akram Khan was quoted saying: “We, at BCB, have had discussions on Jaffer and we are trying to figure out the best role for him. We have the U-19 team, the Bangladesh Cricket Academy, Bangladesh A team and also the senior Test team, so we are still figuring out where he will be most effective. We will soon have a meeting with him.”
