BCCI announces squads for Women's T20 Challenge 2022
The tournament is scheduled to be played between May 23 to May 28.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squads for the upcoming three-team Women’s T20 Challenge. The tournament last took place in 2020 and could not happen last year due to the Covid-19 restrictions. The fourth season of the event begins on May 23, with the first match scheduled between the finalists of the third season – Trailblazers and Supernovas. The final match will be played on May 28 and all the games will be hosted by the MCA Stadium in Pune.
While Harmanpreet Kaur will continue to lead the Supernovas, the Trailblazers will be yet again captained by Smriti Mandhana. Mithali Raj was the skipper of the Velocity till the previous edition, but this time, the squad will be led by all-rounder Deepti Sharma due to the absence of the veteran. Notably, Jhulan Goswami, who was a part of the champions team Trailblazers in 2020, will also be out of action this year along with Shikha Pandey.
“The best of Indian women’s cricket will combine with some of the leading stars from South Africa, England, West Indies and Australia. A total of twelve international players will compete in this year’s Women’s T20 Challenge,” the BCCI’s official release stated.
The three teams, each comprising 16 players, were chosen by the All-India Women’s Selection Committee. The Trailblazers and Supernovas will play the first match of the Women’s T20 Challenge on May 23. The Supernovas will take on Velocity on May 24, followed by the latter facing the Trailblazers on May 26. The tournament final will take place between the top two teams out of the three.
