In the recent times, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has had a stiff stance against the International Cricket Council (ICC). The board was upset with the proposal to change the existing revenue model of the ICC. They wanted that current model must continue where the ‘big three’ dominate the major share of revenues of the international body. However, the recent ICC meeting saw the BCCI get upset as the majority members opted for the new proposed system of revenue sharing.

With the decision going against the wills and wishes of the Indian board, team India now sees itself in a false position. The board is threatening to pull out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 as their protest against the ruling. However, that does not come so easily. As per the laws, if the team boycotts one ICC event, they have to boycott all major tournaments.

Now, as per the reports in The Telegraph, some well-placed sources have revealed that BCCI will consult with the team India captain Virat Kohli and head coach Anil Kumble before giving their final verdict on the issue. The source cited that the captain and the coach are the representatives of the players and hence their views need to be entertained.

“Fact is that the players are the biggest stakeholders and the captain and head coach are their representatives. Once we acknowledge that the players are the No.1 stakeholders, we surely have to ascertain their view. Besides, having won the 2013 Champions Trophy, India are the defending champions,” the source quoted.

The source further added that big decisions such as these cannot be taken in the heat of the moment. A special SGM would be called to decide the final call for the mega event. The board members will putforth their views regarding the same in the meeting.

“One cannot forecast what’s to happen, but an SGM would be called to get the views of all the Board members. It’s then only that there would be clarity on participating in the Champions Trophy,” another top source noted.

As per the new revenue model suggested by the ICC Chairman Shashank Manohar, the share of the BCCI will come drastically down. The Indian board is currently run by 4 men appointed by the Supreme Court with Vinod Rai at the helm. Acting president C.K. Khanna, acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary and treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry are the other three members.
