The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is most likely to invite applications for electing the women’s selection panel. According to the constitution of the board, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CA) appoints the men’s selection panel. However, the CAC don’t have such a provision in women’s cricket.

During the previous Annual General Meeting (AGM), Sourav Ganguly, the BCCI president, said that the office bearers will have to initiate the process of getting the new panel. The current selection panel, led by Hemlata Kala, is nearing the end of its term. Hence, the BCCI is now planning to get the new panel in place.

“All the five members have finished their terms. The CAC doesn’t pick the women’s committee. I don’t know why but they only pick the men’s team selectors and the coach,” Ganguly was earlier quoted as saying in Sportstar.

There’s no clarity on the criteria for selection, but the board officials indicated that the ‘Conflict of Interest’ clause will be kept in mind before zeroing on in a decision. The world’s richest cricket board is now looking to fill the positions for the CAC.

Madan Lal, Gautam Gambhir likely to join CAC

Earlier it was learned that members of the World Cup-winning Indian squads, Madan Lal and Gautam Gambhir would be joining. For the third spot, former women’s international Sulakshana Naik’s name was contemplated. But with the Conflict of Interest issue arising, the BCCI may have to look at alternatives.

“The conflict clause stops everyone, A to Z it stops everyone. It has got former cricketers also, former administrators also. That is why we can’t make the CAC, we can’t make proper selectors. It has to be practical. Conflict should only be for someone like us, who are administrators,” Ganguly said during the AGM in December.

Recently, the MSK Prasad-led selection panel picked the Indian T20I squad for the series versus New Zealand. For the same tour, the BCCI is likely to name the ODI and Test squads latest by December 19.

The Men in Blue are currently busy playing the three-match ODI series against Australia. The women’s team, on the other hand, are gearing up for the T20 World Cup.
