Age fudging has been a major issue in various sports around the globe, which also includes cricket. Last year, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), barred 22 cricketers of the Delhi & Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) for taking part in the age-group tournaments. The names also included prominent names like Nitish Rana and Pratyush Singh, who has been a part of the Delhi Ranji team.

Recently, the Supreme Court appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA), decided to increase the quantum of punishment for the players, provided they are found guilty. They are also planning to take criminal action against them. In such cases, players generally submit false/tampered birth certificates in order to pass the age verification process.

BCCI’s stern actions against wrongdoers

According to the current rule, the BCCI can ban a player for just one season. The new punishments have been mentioned in one of the minutes of CoA’s meeting on May 18. It read, “Players who are found [after a proper enquiry] to have submitted false/tampered birth certificates will be banned for two seasons.”

“In addition, the BCCI may also initiate criminal action against the player and/or any other person responsible for submitting false certificates,” it added.

Meanwhile, the Indian team is currently busy in England where they will play a five-match Test series, which gets underway from the first week of August. The opening match will be played at Edgbaston in Birmingham on August 1. Previously, the Men in Blue played three T20I matches followed by an ODI series. In the 20-overs format, India won the first match but slumped at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.

Nevertheless, they came back to win the final match in Bristol and also the series by 2-1. In the ODI matches, they emerged triumphant at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, but couldn’t win the next two encounters. Subsequently, they lost the series. Virat Kohli’s men would now be focusing to put up an impressive show in the five-day fixtures.
