BCCI to hold Special General Meeting on October 4: Reports: The much awaited special general meeting of the BCCI will in all likelihood be held in Mumbai on October 4. The single biggest agenda for the participants will be to discuss the new president’s name following the death of Jagmohan Dalmiya.
According to a report on IBNlive.com a senior BCCI office-bearer has notified state units about the meeting and the official notification from the board will be dispatched to all members within a day.
Shashank Manohar is the frontrunner for the top post, having earned the support of board secretary Anurag Thakur and his group, as well as that of Sharad Pawar. Arun Jaitley, a crucial player in BCCI politics has also given a thumbs up to Monohar’s name.
His name has to be proposed and seconded by East Zone, whose turn it is to nominate a Board president till 2017. Manohar, who became BCCI president in 2008, is a Nagpur-based lawyer and represents Vidarbha Cricket Association. The last date for filing of nominations for the president is October 3.
The only opposition that Manohar, may face is from the N. Srinivasan lobby. The former BCCI president had met Pawar in Nagpur for support but everything fizzled out after Manohar refused to align with Srinivasan’s group. With the Thakur and Pawar faction coming together, Manohar has at least 15 votes out of a total of 29. This also dashes Tamil Nadu strongman Srinivasan’s hopes of putting up his favoured candidate for the top job.
Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) or National Cricket Club (NCC) – both controlled by former India captain Sourav Ganguly – is likely to propose Monahor’s name.
“It took a lot of persuasion from Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Anurag Thakur to convince a reluctant Manohar to take up the top job all over again,” a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying. “The deal was clinched when Pawar, the leader of Manohar’s group, also gave his go-ahead in the matter along with former treasurer Ajay Shirke” he added.
