The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday, July 22, decided not to panic on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) pressure to come under the scope of National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). In a meeting held in Kolkata, CEO Rahul Johri, who represented Vinod Rai-led Committee of Administrators (CoA), acting president CK Khanna, acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary, acting treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry besides former India captain and CAB president Sourav Ganguly were present.

“We discussed these matters, but no decision has been taken yet. We will be having another meeting shortly,” Khanna was quoted as saying to the media after the meeting, Business Standard reported.

Another top Board official said, “We had a healthy discussion about the NADA issue and the T20 leagues. It was an open-minded discussion and hopefully, we’ll make a decision when we meet next.”

The doping conundrum

The Indian board has been pressurised for some time by the national anti-doping body to come under its purview. The board has also been hesitant to come under the ambit of the national sports federations. The Indian cricketers are also averse to the idea for they fear their privacy would be breached by this move.

The meeting also saw discussions on exercising control over private T20 leagues organised in various states, like the Tamil Nadu Premier League and Karnataka Premier League.

The BCCI has in the past rejected the proposal of the NADA to conduct testing in cricket at the national level as said in the WADA and International Cricket Council regulations.

There has been a controversy in the recent past over the doping-related ban of an Indian batsman and the BCCI came under criticism for its handling of the matter. It was said that the cricket body showed its inexperience in the issue and questions were being asked surrounding handing such responsibility to a body like NADA.
