On Day 4 of the third Test between England and South Africa, Ben Stokes’ bowling brilliance was the thing to watch out for. While the visitors were in the 17th over of the chase, the England all-rounder bowled a Yorker to Quinton de Kock. It was so lethal that the batsman had simply no chance to block it because the ball pitched right at his feet. That was a masterpiece delivery by one of England’s most talented all-rounders.
And what’s better? Stokes took another wicket on the very next ball. He sent back South African captain Faf du Plessis for a golden duck. South Africa are in all sorts of trouble as they have been set a mammoth target of 492 by England at The Oval. At the close of the fourth day’s play, the visitors were 117 for four, requiring 375 more runs to reach their victory target. Dean Elgar ended the day on 72 not out and Temba Bavuma on 16 not out.
“That was as quick as I’ve seen him bowl,” Stuart Broad said after Stokes’ back to back wickets. “It was an intimating spell, a bit like Andrew Flintoff used to bowl – heavy and at the batsman. It was great to get two key batsmen out with genuine pace and exciting to be on the field.” Ben Stokes has been hailed as one of the best all-rounders in cricket, across all formats.
5th on ICC all-rounder rankings
He stands fifth on the current list of ICC All-rounders, a point behind his teammate Moeen Ali who stands at No. 4. He was also the most expensive purchase in the tenth edition of the Indian Premier League, in which he also won the award for the most valuable player of the tournament.
