While it was expected that Joe Root would be the captain, there was an interesting take on the fact that Ben Stokes who was named as his deputy. While Stokes was indeed one of those who was impressive on the Indian tour, the fact was that his fire, while unmatched was also something that ensured that he would be privy to a leadership role someday or the other.

Speaking about his appointment, Stokes went ahead and stated that Test cricket was indeed the pinnacle and that people needed to fall in love with it again.  “We need to win but we want to perform in a manner that makes people want to come and watch us,” Stokes said. “Test cricket is the pinnacle and we need people to fall in love with it again,” added Stokes.

As vice-captain, Stokes also went on to state that he wanted to be privy to all the aspects of the game. He also went on to add that he would be one who does not shy away from tactical input when need be.

“I want to be involved in all aspects of the game, whether it’s hitting the winning runs or taking the final wicket. I have always wanted to be in the middle of it. Being vice-captain I will have to bring a mental and supportive side too. If I am not involved in the game then I will have to add my tactical input.

“I have been more vocal over the last year but I only speak when I think something needs to be said. I’m not one for cliches. Just being vice-captain doesn’t give me the right to say whatever I want.”
