In cricket, most of the players you will see are right-handed. In fact, according to some stats, 85% of all batters and bowlers in cricket are right-handed. This could be explained by saying that in general, more people are right-handed than left-handed. But, it would be fascinating to see if there is ever an ODI team that will field players of only one type.

Cricket teams, in general, don’t like that kind of a combination, because that makes them vulnerable as a unit. Having said that, right-handers dominate the game like anything. It is only fitting to imagine a World ODI XI with essentially all right-handed players.

Rohit Gurunath Sharma has been holding top positions in the ODI batsman’s ranking for the past few years. If we sit back today to make a list of the best ODI XI, there is no doubt that he will walk into the line-up with ease. Since he got promoted to the opener’s role in 2013, Sharma has racked up runs year after year.

The Mumbai batsman, who was seen as a prodigal batter ever since his younger days, made his debut in 2007 but it took him some time to get settled at the international stage. If Sharma was to retire today, he would be one of the best-ever openers in the ODI format. In terms of numbers, he leads the way by a mile as well.

In a total of 143 matches as an opener, the 34-year-old has notched up 7238 runs at an average of 57.44. 27 of his 29 ODI centuries have come in the matches when he has opened the innings. In the 2019 World Cup, he smashed five centuries, which set a new record for the most number of centuries by a batsman during a single edition.

Now, some might say that Babar Azam has opened only twice in ODI cricket and is a specialist no. 3. But there are some contenders who have a better record and for a much longer time, due to which Babar was falling out of favour. But, it is almost criminal to leave out the batsman who claimed the ODI No.1 ranking from Virat Kohli.

With that being said, it is worth noting that the Pakistan batsman has been able to seamlessly transition to the role of an opener in the shortest format and could also do that in the ODI if the situation arises. On top of that, with a stroke player like Sharma, Babar would make a great combination as he can anchor the innings. As a matter of fact, in 2020, while making his India-Pakistan combined XI, he himself chose to open the innings with Rohit.

Now, apart from this argument, there is no question that can be raised around his capabilities. He has been one of the most prolific run-getters for Pakistan in the limited-overs format. In 80 ODIs so far, he has managed to rack up 3808 runs with an average of 56.83. He has 13 centuries and 17 half-centuries, which makes his numbers quite hard to ignore. Babar can be termed as a legend in the format, just purely based on his current stats.

There would be very few people who won’t put Virat Kohli at no. 3 in any ODI team of the last decade. His records are quite remarkable and the way he has carried his game in the format has also opened up new avenues. The current Indian captain broke into the national team on the back of some good performances for the India Emerging team and his U19 record.

In late 2009, Kohli smashed a century against Sri Lanka in Kolkata in an ODI match. There was no looking back after that knock as he kept piling on runs. If we look at his numbers at no. 3 alone, they are staggering. In 191 innings at the position, he has scored 10,053 runs with an average of 62.44, which is a touch more than his career average of 59.07.

36 out of his 43 ODI tons have come while batting at three. It is also worth noting how he has revolutionized chasing big scores in one-day cricket. The number of runs that Kohli has scored in the last decade was probably unimaginable at the start of this century. And his greatest quality which makes him stand tall in front of his peers has to be consistency.

Ross Taylor is the highest run-getter for New Zealand in ODI cricket. With 8581 runs in the format, he has not only etched himself as one of the great Blackcaps player but also has made himself eligible to be in discussions whenever an all-time ODI XI is made. His record in the last few years has been quite brilliant.

Having made his debut for New Zealand in 2006, Taylor almost instantly caught people’s attention for his ability to score quickly and hit big sixes. With time, he has toned down his aggression a bit, on and off the field. His change in attitude post the whole captaincy debacle made Taylor form his own great legacy with strong performances for his team.

A little look at his numbers batting at no. 4 will give you an idea why New Zealand has been so successful in the past few years. In 179 innings at no. 4, Taylor has scored 7664 runs with an average of 52.13. The no. 4 position is quite a difficult position to bat at and with the kind of record which he has, there is no one better suited to fill in this spot in this team.

The fact that Mushfiqur Rahim plays in a team that doesn’t enjoy a lot of success or limelight led to his numbers not coming upin the conversation of the best middle-order batsmen in the current times. But, with the bat, Rahim has not put a foot wrong in one-day cricket since his captaincy stint started and ended in a rush.

Rahim is one of those batters in world cricket who slip from the radar. But a deep look at his numbers and the matches where Bangladesh has done well, will give you a clear picture of his consistency and contributions. He has already attained the stature of one of the legendary players from Bangladesh, but his legacy would be incomplete without his mention among the best ODI batsmen of this current time.

Much like Taylor, Rahim bats most of the time at no. 4, but there is no doubt that he can seamlessly transition to no. 5 if asked. Since the start of 2014, he has played 104 ODIs scoring 4104 runs with a staggering average of 49.44. In this time, he has scored seven hundreds and 28 fifties. These numbers put him right up with some of the best in the world. And, it almost seems that his batting is on an upward rise.

Jos Buttler is everything that the English one-day cricket of recent times stands for. He has a complete game when it comes to ODI cricket and can become one of the greats in the sport in the next few years. Since 2015, he has been quite prolific in the format and has, in some ways, redefined batting in the middle overs in one-day cricket.

He is destructive and quickly changes the momentum of the game. After playing 148 ODI matches, Buttler has scored 3872 runs with an average of just under 40 and a strike rate of 118.66. Now, the thing about him isn’t just the fact that he can score quickly, his strength is also to score consistently. He has nine centuries and 20 fifties in his 123 innings.

Batting at no. 4, no. 5, no. 6, or no. 7, Buttler has done it all and succeeded quite brilliantly. There have been times when he has been promoted to no. 4 and he has returned with a century. The fact that he is used to playing in tough situations and comes up with good performances more often than not makes him a special player.

Sometimes there is so much talk around England’s batting that Chris Woakes’ bowling goes unnoticed. The 32-year-old bowling all-rounder is someone who has consistently picked up wickets in the powerplay and delivered for his side time and again. His numbers are quite a perfect metric to look at his capabilities with the white-ball.

In 100 innings of bowling in ODIs so far, Woakes has managed to pick up 149 wickets. That is almost three wickets in every two matches. His bowling average is 30. 34, but the strike rate is 32.80. This implies that he picks up a wicket in every 5.2 overs in ODIs, which is quite good. His economy of 5.54 is pretty much decent given England plays on batting-friendly surfaces and Woakes has been able to take wickets in those conditions.

Apart from his bowling excellence, the Warwickshire player also possesses batting talent. He plays in a team that has a really good and long batting line-up, which doesn’t allow him to get a lot of opportunities. In 72 innings, he has scored 1315 runs at an average of 25.78. His strike rate is 90.87, which is quite alright for a batter at that position.

Rashid Khan arrived at the international stage as a 16-year-old leg-spinner from Afghanistan, a country that had produced good players but not world beaters yet. But his arrival put his country’s cricket on the world map and also added a new chapter to the book of leg-spin bowling.

It was his pace that was a bit more than any other leg spinner, making him more of a threat. His change of variations, his ability to bowl the good lengths, and his ability to dry up the scoring rate make him one of the best in the world. Rashid&#8217;s skills have taken him to almost every top-level T20 league in the world and he has returned with some amazing records.

In ODIs, his record is quite unreal. He has picked up 140 wickets in 70 innings. His strike rate is 26.66 while his bowling average is 18.58. It is also worth noting that he has genuine skills in batting and has scored five ODI fifties already. He also has a strike rate of 103 for 1008 ODI runs.

There are few qualities that a fast-bowler should have. If a bowler can swing the ball, bowl at pace, have a short pitch ball, and a good full ball, he can be as good a fast-bowler anyone has seen. When Kagiso Rabada made his debut for South Africa in 2015, he was a good fresh talent. However, in 2021, he is probably one of the most complete pacers in the world.

The last few years have been a little difficult for South African cricket. They have failed to win a lot of matches and there are multiple reasons which have contributed to this. But, all this time, Rabada has managed to give his best and is rated among the best in the world. There have been injuries that have bugged him at times, but at 26, he is just getting started.

He has picked up 119 wickets from 75 innings so far at an average of 27.67. His strike rate has been 33.29, which is among the best in the world. In today’s day and age, when bowlers generally have economies close to 6, Rabada’s economy stands at 4.99, which is another indication of his talent.

Pat Cummins played his first international game for Australia a few months after he graduated from high school. That was back in 2011 and it took him some time to get accustomed to the ways of playing cricket at the highest level. It didn’t help that he constantly got into trouble with injuries.

But, post-2017, Cummins has revived his career in quite a remarkable fashion and done justice to what was thought of him when first played in 2011. Some may argue that he has been more prolific in Test cricket but his ODI records are quite good as well. In 69 ODIs, he has picked up 111 wickets at an average of 28.78.

His bowling strike rate has been 32.89, which implies how often he is able to pick up wickets. The fact that Cummins can swing the bowl at a high speed makes him quite hostile to pace. With the kind of action and bowling he has, it doesn’t take a lot to change the match in just a few moments. One of his greatest strengths also has to be his intensity with the ball.

After Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra faded away from the ODI cricket scene, India saw the emergence of some quality pacers like Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav, in the 2015 World Cup. But, it was a year later that India found a bowler who fit properly in the aspects of bowling in an ODI match.

Much like Shami and Yadav, Bumrah had pace. But his ability to bowl in the death stood out by a distance. Shami and Yadav eventually became better at the death, especially the former, but there is no one matching Bumrah. He picks up wickets for fun in the ODI format. In the last few months, he has turned out to be one of the most effective players for the Indian team.

In 67 matches so far, Bumrah has picked up 108 wickets at an average of 25.33. His strike rate is 32.62 which is clear evidence of his knack for picking wickets. His economy of 4.66 is quite remarkable considering the number of overs that he bowls in the death overs. At 27, he is still young and on a journey to become one of the finest bowlers Indian cricket has seen.
