Betting in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) snatched another life on Monday.  The man, who was killed, has been identified as Nasim Ahmed, a BBA student of a private university in Dhaka. The 23-year-old was stabbed to death on Monday morning reportedly by a group of miscreants for protesting against betting during a match in Sylhet.

Police are still investigating the incident. “Our focus is not whether he was protesting or not but instead the evil practice itself because it is an open secret that betting frenzy returns with the BPL every year. It involves everybody: from the rich to the poor, from an aged individual to a student in a country where betting is illegal. We do not have any survey that would help identify how much money is involved in betting during the more than a month-long BPL tournament,” a police spokesperson was quoted as saying by DailyStar.

But, independent international studies suggested that the amount of money was involved in the betting was more than a billion dollars. It is understood the syndicates behind this betting probably from India or from the Middle East.

Betting is epidemic in Bangladesh

Betting in the BPL is not new. In the betting ring students, daily labours, rickshaw pullers and even farmers are involved. As per the betting syndicates, BPL is a real platform to run betting and it is spoiling lives of local people.

Betting in Bangladesh is very common and it is going on in open space. According to reports one person just needs to walk out of his home and the person will find a betting ring at a tea stall or here and there. There is still question whether the police are not taking actions against these betting rings.

In Bangladesh small-scale betting has been growing like an epidemic and tragically Nasim has become another casualty of it. And the time has come to eradicate the epidemic problem from the nation otherwise more people will lose their lives.
