Bob Willis Trophy: Nick Gubbins messes reverse sweep horribly, gets bowled

International cricket returned to England last month with the West Indies travelling to the country. However, it took a month more for domestic cricket to commence as the English County season, Bob Willis Trophy, got underway last week. The action has returned to the fullest in the country now with only one out nine matches ending in a draw.

Middlesex and Surrey clashed in one of the South Group matches at the Kennington Oval. Middlesex batsmen dominated the proceedings right through but it was in the second innings when Nick Gubbins’ dismissal left everyone in splits. He was exceptional in the game scoring 192 and 61 runs in the match but the way he got out in the second essay was the talk of the town on social media.

The incident happened in the 59th over of the innings when the left-arm spinner Daniel Moriarty was bowling. In order to add quick runs, Nick Gubbins tried to play a reverse sweep off a pretty straight-forward delivery which didn’t delivery. The batsman missed connecting the ball only for it to uproot the middle-stump. Gubbins’ position after getting out was way too funny which left the commentators in splits as well.

Middlesex won the match comfortably

As far as the match is concerned, Middlesex opted to bat after winning the toss. Nick Gubbins led their batting scoring 192 runs off while John Simpson chipped in with a 53. They declared on 347/6 on the second day after Tim Murtagh triggered a sensational collapse for Surrey. They were sitting pretty at 254/4 at one stage and seemed as if they will take a crucial lead.

But Surrey lost their last six wickets for just 28 runs and 16 overs thanks to Murtagh’s five-wicket haul. Middlesex then added quick runs to the kitty to set a target of 314 on the final day for their opponents. But Surrey batting once again crumbled after recovering from 20/3.

They lost their fourth wicket on 84 and ended up being skittled for just 123 runs in the 63rd over of the innings. Murtagh and Miguel Cummins shared five wickets between them while Sam Robson cleaned up the tail.
