Sylhet Sixers defeated Rajshahi Kings comfortably by 33 runs and registered their third consecutive victory of the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). The home side is yet to lose a game this season and are taking full advantage of the home games in the first phase of the league. However, they would want to continue winning and hope that the opening pair continues to flourish for them.

After being invited to bat first by Kings, the openers of Sixers, Andre Fletcher and Upul Tharanga, strode out to the middle to provide a great start on a flat wicket. They successfully managed to do so and added yet another century opening stand. The former though missed out on his half-century and was run-out in a mix-up with his partner. Tharanga scored 50 off just 37 runs deliveries as he too followed soon in the next over.

But Danushka Gunathilaka didn’t allow the opposition to come back despite wickets fell at the other end. He scored a stupendous 42 off 22 cherries with 2 fours and 3 colossal maximums. Eventually, the score went past 200 thanks to Ross Whiteley who clubbed a couple out of the ground in the penultimate over. The hosts finished their innings on 205/6 in their stipulated 20 overs. Kesrick Williams managed to pick 2 wickets but at the expense of 39 runs and was comparatively the best bowler for Kings.

The chase

Rajshahi Kings required more than 10 an over right from the outset and were also provided with a brilliant start by Luke Wright and Mominul Haque. But the middle-order collapsed and they were reduced to 79/4 from 50/0 in the space of 26 balls. It was the duo of Liam Plunkett and Abul Hasan who sucked the momentum out of their innings which never recovered despite a fighting stand between Wright and James Franklin.

Both added 54 for the fifth wicket but the required rate kept on rising. Once both were sent back into the hut in quick succession, only formalities were left to be completed. While Wright scored 56 off 39 with 3 fours and four gigantic sixes, the New Zealander put up a fighting show by scoring 35 off 23 balls before being run-out. Rajshahi Kings could only score 172/8 in 20 overs as Plunkett and Hasan returned with excellent figures of 3/29 and 3/22 respectively.
