The Sylhet Sixers are not having the best of times in the ongoing edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). At almost the half way stage in the tournament, they languish at the penultimate spot in the points table. Things have just turned bad to worse for the Sixers as their skipper David Warner was recently forced to quit the tournament midway due to an elbow injury. Warner, too, was not at his personal best in the tournament, but certainly did enjoy his moment of brilliance at the crease on a couple of occasions.

Now, with Warner heading back to Australia, the Sylhet Sixers were in need of a new leader. The recent reports suggest that they have found a replacement and have appointed veteran Pakistani cricketer Sohail Tanvir as their new captain for the remainder of the season. The 34-year old cricketer is immensely experienced in the shortest format of the game. He is a globe trotter when it comes to the T20 leagues.

He has played over 300 T20 matches in his career thus far, and certainly is a good choice in the capacity of the leader. He will have his task cut out though, and the road ahead will not be an easy one. With the business end of the tournament coming close, Sohail Tanvir will have to ensure that his side gets over the line in majority of their remaining fixtures. Currently, the Sylhet Sixers has won only two out of the seven matches played in the season.

Warner’s elbow injury

As far as David Warner is concerned, it was unfortunate for him to leave the season midway. After Steve Smith, he became the second player to be ruled out of the season with the elbow injury. However, the follow-ups have suggested that Warner’s injury is not as serious as the one that Steve Smith had sustained. Smith underwent a surgery last week and is in the process of rehabilitation already.

Both Smith and Warner are keys to the Australian side as the build up to the World Cup intensifies. They can save the dwindling fortunes of the sinking Aussie ship. The veteran cricketers, who are currently serving their respective bans, will have an away series against Pakistan in the UAE as their preparation ground for the World Cup. While Warner is likely to be fit for the series, Smith’s fitness and rehabilitation is more of a race against time.
