Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has signed an overseas player deal and is set to head back to Middlesex for the Natwest Blast. The aggressive Kiwi star will be playing nine matches and balance his schedule with the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2017.

McCullum was currently in the news after he was banned for slow over-rate during a Big Bash League game against Perth Scorchers this season. The big hitter played was leading the Brisbane Heat in this year’s BBL. McCullum’s attacking-style of captaincy was highly praised by Englishmen and that played a huge role in England cricket modeling their structure around to perform better in the limited-over competitions.

Apart from ‘Baz’ as he is popularly known around the world, former great Daniel Vettori too will be playing in the county circuit. Former teammates, Vettori was Brisbane’s coach this winter and has agreed for a similar two-month deal with Middlesex.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to be involved with Middlesex in their pursuit of a T20 title,” Vettori had said back in December. “There is talent and experience in all facets of their game and I look forward to complementing their skills and all the fantastic work the current coaching staff has done.”

In ODI’s, the wicketkeeper-batsman has played 260 matches, putting a total of 6083 runs at an average of 30.41, and a spectacular strike rate of 96.37. He has also registered five centuries and 32 fifties, playing for the ‘Black Caps’.

McCullum is a much sought-after player in the T20 circuit. He is also a regular in the IPL. He has played for Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, Kochi Tuskers before joining Gujarat Lions last season.

Middlesex have reached the Twenty20 final only once, winning in 2008. They claimed the County Championship in 2016 for the first time since 1993.
