Pakistan have had a topsy-turvy season thus far in the ongoing Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates. Sarfraz Ahmed’s men romped home comfortably in their first match against Hong Kong. However, in their match thereafter against India, they slumped to an eight-wicket defeat in Dubai. Both their openers perished in quick time after which Shoaib Malik and Babar Azam threatened to script a comeback.

However, Kuldeep Yadav got rid of Azam to break the 82-run stand after which Pakistan lost wickets regularly and were eventually bowled out for 162 runs. The Indian batsmen didn’t have to drop much sweat and they chased the target down comfortably with as many as 21 overs to spare.

Pakistan may prefer to bat first

The arch-rivals are again set to cross swords in the Super 4 stage of the 50-overs event at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Meanwhile, Venkatesh Prasad, the former Indian fast bowler, believes Pakistan should try and build partnerships in order to get under India’s skins.

“For Pakistan to push India, it is important for the batsmen to occupy the crease for a long period, build partnerships and convert the starts. If they bat first, there has to be at least 280 runs on the board for the bowlers to defend. Although batting first is a challenge in the Dubai conditions, Pakistan may prefer to, considering they are not the best chasers,” Prasad wrote in his column for The Times of India (TOI).

Pakistan, in their last match against Afghanistan, strained to defeat their opponents. The likes of Hashmatullah Shahidi and Asghar Afghan scored half-centuries to put forth a competitive total for the Men in Green to chase down. Sarfraz’s side finally got home by three wickets, but not before the Afghans got them by the scruff of their necks by picking up frequent wickets.
