England and Wales Cricket Board are planning on an IPL-esque tournament. The tournament is to enter the cricketing circuit in England from 2020. Even before its layout, there are rumors that it may hamper the current domestic setup. ECB on Tuesday gave a nod to begin the formalisation of the tournament.

The T20 tournament will be played between eight cities and will last for 38 days. It is all set to take the Indian Premier League and the Big Bash League head on. There will be a total of 36 games in the tournament and no English County sides will feature as there will new franchises entering the cricketing world.

Eoin Morgan, the limited-overs captain for England believes that this was needed and does not see this as a change. He said, “Change is always difficult but I don’t see this as change. It probably should have happened a while ago. The purpose of this tournament will be to grow the game.”

He also said that if the thing does not work, there will always be the age-old domestic circuit in place. “And so even if this doesn’t work, we can always go back. Although I think it will,” explained Morgan.

The ECB constitution says that the counties are allowed to take part in any cricketing competition that is supported by the ECB and as this competition won’t, they have been asked to accept the change in the constitution. For this, the counties will receive, 1.3 million pounds every year for coming five years.

Morgan believes that this tournament will not harm the county cricket in any way as he thinks the core cricket fans will always be there and these tournaments are proven in other countries. Morgan was talking to the British media where he said, “I don’t think it will damage county cricket at all. It’s not a gamble. It’s proven in other countries that it is possible to have it all. We are never going to lose our core cricket fans.”

This is a huge step for the England cricket as Ben Stokes only a day ago sighted the problem of competitiveness of cricket in England as he compared their domestic circuit to the IPL and BBL. However, the 18 counties will have to accept the constitutional change as this tournament might be the thing England need.
