England’s most successful batter Charlotte Edwards held the Women’s Super League Trophy aloft in Chelmsford last year in the inaugural season of the tournament. She is now preparing for the title defense as the Southern Vipers will take on Western Storms in the season openers at the Ageas Bowl on August 10.

Edwards hints at retirement

With the tournament just a week away, Edwards has hinted at calling it a day after the conclusion of the forthcoming tournament. The former England captain had retired from international cricket last year but continues to play T20 cricket in WSL as well as the Women’s Big Bash League where she represents Adelaide Strikers. The right-hander finished her England career as the highest run-getter in the history of Women’s ODIs. Her tally of 5992 runs in 50-over cricket was eclipsed by Mithali Raj in the recently concluded ICC Women’s World Cup.

“It might be my last one, but I haven’t made a full decision on it yet,” she told BBC Radio Solent.

“The body and mind need to be at the best to play in this competition, I’m looking forward to the next few weeks.”

Edwards helped England win two world titles

Edwards was a radio and TV expert during England’s successful campaign in the World Cup. After spending almost a month behind the microphone, she is looking forward to getting back to playing. The 37-year old has led England to a 50-over World Cup and World T20 title in 2009.

“I’m carrying a bit of a hamstring niggle at the moment, but it’s been a long summer so far and I’m looking forward to playing,” she said.

“This is a really good tournament at this stage of the season and T20 is a great format to market women’s cricket. I love being around this group of players.”

Edwards’ leadership in the WSL was impressive for Southern Vipers. She was less successful with the bat, scoring 64 runs in 4 innings at 16. She played a handsome knock of 24 off 18 balls in the finals to make light weight of the 141-run target set by Western Storm. In the WBBL, her performance was slightly better as she amassed 141 runs at 20.14 from 7 innings.

If this happens to be the last time Edwards’ is going to be seen playing cricket, her teammates will make sure that she bows out on a high.
