Cheteshwar Pujara has been the backbone of the Indian Test team for a few years now. The right-hand batsman is known for his ability to play long innings and wearing out opposition bowlers. He has some great figures in red ball cricket so far scoring 5426 in 68 matches with an exceptional average of 51.19. The 30-year-old is currently ranked 4th in the ICC Test rankings with 834 rating points to his name.

The Saurashtra batsman is having a dream series in Australia. He is currently the highest run-scorer in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar trophy with 521 in 7 innings which also includes three hundreds and one-half century as well. No other batsman has even crossed 300 runs in the series apart from Rishabh Pant who hogged the limelight with his 159-run knock in Sydney.

Pujara reminds off Sachin, Lara

Michael Clarke’s comments came when India’s number 3 batsman Cheteshwar Pujara scored his 3rd century in the ongoing series. The 30-year-old batsman came into bat when India was put under pressure with an early wicket of  KL Rahul. He stood firmly and brought back India in the match with a 116-run stand with opener Mayank Agarwal. While the other batsmen were falling from the other end, the Rajkot boy showed his temperament and smashed 193 runs.

While speaking in the post-match show on Sony, Clarke said the great players convert their 100s into doubles and doubles into triples. Pujara who is at his peak can sense his hunger for scoring runs. Even with second new ball taken by the Aussies, he did not try to play loose shots as he played with patience knowingly he is in good nick and wants a massive hundred.

“I had two idols as a young boy – Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar. Brian Lara was the best at it. Anytime he would get a start, he will make it big. He made a 500 in first-class cricket. And he’s got the record in Test cricket, he will make big hundreds. Sachin as well… You see Sachin get to a thirty and he would turn that into a hundred. Very rarely would he miss out once he got into his innings,” he said.
