Indian No.3, Cheteshwar Pujara is creating new records almost every time he walks out to bat and the zone he is in right now makes batting in difficult circumstances look as easy as it can get. His knock of 143 runs against Sri Lanka in the second Test match at Nagpur, was a display of patience and his hunger for runs in the longest format.

In a marathon knock, Pujara batted for around 500 minutes and continued to toil the opposition bowlers without much trouble. Twitter was also on fire lauding the calmness and technique of India’s most consistent Test batsman on a pitch that required a long haul.

It is quite unusual that a batsman is at the crease for straight 8 days of a series and that is what a player like Pujara can do, with his ability to hold his wicket in both pressure and comfortable situations. He started his innings with a rather different mindset when India had lost the wicket of opener KL Rahul early on the first day of the Test match.

The importance of the 500-minute stay

Pujara joined hands with Murali Vijay, who was returning to the team after almost 8 months due to injury, but never looked like he was away from the game. Vijay scored a well-compiled hundred and stitched a 209-run partnership along with Pujara to dominate the Test match.

The Saurashtra lad, on the other hand, continued to show his resilience and form from the 1st Test match in Kolkata, where he scored an important 52 in the first inning when the ball was doing all sorts of things. But this 143-run knock which continued for almost 500 minutes is very crucial for both Pujara and the Indian team.

On the second day of the 2nd Test match, he played a calculative knock and executed every session of play in a different manner. It was the final session in which the 29-year-old got to his 14th Test match hundred and also scored runs at a decent strike rate. He also became the fastest batsman to score 3000 Test runs in India, after breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record.

Here is how Twitterati reacted to Pujara’s marathon knock:
