Indian cricket plans to launch a women’s edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the next three years. The men’s version was inaugurated in 2008 and has been a grand success with every passing year. Cricketers from every nook and corner of the world have plied their trade in the T20 extravaganza and have lent stardust to one of the most popular T20 tournaments across the globe.

The women’s IPL is only expected to be an icing on the cake. Vinod Rai, the head of the Committee of Administrators of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), updated about the same. “We are planning to get a women’s IPL in place in two to three years”, Rai was quoted as saying in News 18.

The positive initiative

A women’s match between the BCCI XI and IPL XI will be staged on May 22 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The contest will be played at the same venue before the playoff of the ongoing IPL. Women’s cricketers from Australia, England and South Africa will play an Indian team under the IPL rules.

“The match to be played between a BCCI XI and IPL XI will take place ahead of the first (men’s IPL) playoff at the Wankhede Stadium,” Rai added.

The Indian women’s team had a successful campaign in the ICC Women’s World Cup in England back in June. The side captained by Mithali Raj progressed to the Final of the tournament where they lost against England, led by Heather Knight.

The likes of Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur shone in the tournament which has induced the authorities to think on broader lines as far as women’s cricket is concerned. They also went on to beat South Africa in the ODI and the T20I series, which was organised alongside the matches of their male counterparts.
