Ever since the Supreme Court of India appointed a Committee of Administrators (COA) to take up the administration of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) there has been a constant tussle. With two power-houses in the board, there are questions raised on each move and decision made by either. The recent in issue is with regards to the development that Champions Trophy has now been replaced with World T20.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) in a recent meeting made the decision that it was time they scrapped the Champions Trophy 2021 and instead hold another World T20 event. This despite the fact that a World T20 championship will be played in 2020. The COA wrote a letter to the acting secretary of the BCCI and asked why they were not updated on the same.

COA questions Choudhary

TOI, quoting a copy of the letter that COA sent to Amitabh Choudhary mentioned that, “The COA has also not interfered with your travel for ICC and ACC meetings. This is despite the fact that you never briefed us in advance of the agenda items proposed to be discussed in these meetings or took its mandate for the discussions or even bothered to keep the CoA updated on what transpired in these meetings.

One important development that the CoA was completely kept in the dark was the replacement of the Champions Trophy 2021 with an additional ICC World T20 event,” the letter stated.

The acting secretary of the BCCI and the chief executive Rahul Johri attend all the ICC and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meetings. Though the COA stated that Choudhary didn’t update them about the major changes, Johri who was also present and directly reports to the committee could’ve briefed them on the matter as well.

“Why is Choudhary blamed alone for not briefing the COA? They stay in touch with Johri. They could have asked him about what’s happening. This means they have not defined the roles properly,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying on Cricbuzz.

Confused about its powers

There has been a constant question about the extent of COA’s authority and the official further added to it.

“The CoA is confused about its powers. The ICC will never wait for BCCI before taking an important policy decision. When the BCCI office-bearers tried to bat for Champions Trophy, they found no support from the men who run the show in BCCI now. Is the COA saying they want to be part of ICC matters now?” the official inquired.
