While Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja are basking in the glory after their heroic innings that rescued Team India in the first innings, Virat Kohli once again failed to impress with the bat. The stylish batter’s lean run of form doesn’t seem to budge, as he was dismissed after having just 11 runs to his name. Former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar has provided an insight into the batter’s prolonged poor form.

Kohli came to the crease after the dismissal of Cheteshwar Pujara and was looking to steady the ship along with Hanuma Vihari. The former Indian skipper refrained from taking any risks against the seaming ball and was adamant to leave the balls alone outside the off stump, something he has struggled to do in the past. He was growing into confidence and was looking better at the crease before an indecisive attempt to leave Matthew Pott’s delivery caused his demise as the ball came off his inside edge onto the stumps.

Manjrekar spoke about the batter’s troubles and stated that Kohli’s technique is not perfect at this point, but some batters score runs irrespective of their flawed technique. He also reckons Kohli was down on confidence while batting and has had some misfortune along with his poor form.

“What do I say, as an expert when I see I have some opinion that the confidence has gone down a little, he is enduring slight bad luck also, there are technical issues, I feel he is playing a lot on the front foot but it is not because of this he is not scoring runs, runs are scored despite all this. Everyone does not have the technical perfection but they score runs,” Manjrekar said during a discussion on Sony Sports.

Don’t know how Virat Kohli’s lean phase has gone on for so long: Sanjay Manjrekar

The former Indian cricketer also expressed his surprise at Kohli’s prolonged lean run of form as a batter of his calibre should not be enduring it for such a long period. The right-hand batter has endured a torrid time in the last couple of years as he has failed to register a century in any format for more than two years now and has amassed a meagre 852 runs at a mediocre average of 27.48 in the longest format of the game since the start of 2020.

“Virat Kohli’s form is surprising me because it came suddenly. When great batters go out of form, they come back in form quickly. You will have to say that we don’t know how the out-of-form phase has gone on for so long,” the cricketer-turned-expert added.
