The English summer is turning out to be quite tricky for Virat Kohli’s men. After winning the T20I series, the Men in Blue succumbed to a 1-2 defeat in the ODIs, as they lost the decider at Headingley. India lost steam in the second half of the series losing the 3rd ODI by eight wickets as England rode on Joe Root’s 13th ODI century to chase down a target of 257 in 44.3 overs on Tuesday.

The decision to drop KL Rahul in the final ODI received a lot of flak, former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly also spoke about it in his column for the TOI. Ganguly vexed out at the Indian team management for their decisions with regards to the selection of the playing XI in the series decider, adding that constant experimentation in the middle-order is hurting the side and KL Rahul should be given a longer run at the No.4 spot.

The No. 4 dilemma for the Indian ODI team is far from over and if Ganguly is to be believed, Rahul is the long-term solution to the problem. The 46-year-old wrote in his column, “Rahul is a must for Virat in the middle order which needs a bit of strengthening. It’s important that the management gives an extended run to the No. 4 so that he can play with a bit of freedom and not worry about his place.”

Pacers need to deliver

While the spinners have accounted for the majority of wickets so far on the tour, Ganguly feels it is high time that the seamers step up to the occasion. Dada stressed the importance of pacers pitching in with wickets as spinners can’t always complete the job. He also questioned the inclusion of Bhuvaneshwar Kumar for the 3rd ODI as he was coming out of an injury whereas Umesh Yadav looked in decent enough rhythm after the first two matches.

The absence of Jasprit Bumrah has left a huge void in the pace attack. Bumrah is slated to miss the first Test and is currently rehabbing a finger injury.
