Anil Kumble, the former Indian cricketer, had some words of wisdom during the coronavirus pandemic, which has brought the world to a standstill over the last few weeks. The COVID-19 cases in India have reached nearly 63,000 with the ungodly virus accounting for the lives of over 2,109. Maharashtra has been deeply affected as 779 out of 20,228 people have died thus far

Kumble, who’s popularly called Jumbo by fans, said that the current phase is like a Test match where one can’t afford to be complacent. He feels that it won’t take much time for the tables to turn if one lets its guard down. However, the veteran reckons that with courage and determination, its possible to register even an outright victory in the grave global situation.

Test matches cannot be won just by a first-innings lead: Anil Kumble

“If we have to fight this coronavirus pandemic, we have to be in this together. It’s like a Test match, cricket Test matches are of five days. But this has been longer,” Kumble was quoted as saying in a video on his official Twitter handle.

“Cricket Test matches consist of two innings each, but this can be even more. So, don’t be complacent that we had a slender lead in the first innings because the second innings can be really rough. We have to win this battle, it cannot be won just by a first-innings lead, we need to win this battle by registering an outright victory,” he stated.

In the last few days, the doctors, nurses, police and other personnel is charge have been working out of their skin to bring back sanity. The 49-year-old Kumble, who played 132 Tests and 271 ODIs, didn’t forget to express his gratitude to the ones, who are working by the clock.

“I take this opportunity to thank all the corona warriors, be it the doctors, nurses, the attenders, the sanitation workers, volunteers, the government workers, police. All of you have been doing a great job,” Kumble added.

It’s been nearly two months since Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the first phase of the lockdown period. The previous phase of the lockdown started from May 3 and will continue until May 17. For the time being, there’s no clear picture on what will happen thereafter.
