Guyana Amazon Warriors, the runners-up of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2019, didn’t make the greatest of starts this time. In a rain-curtailed game at the Brian Lara Stadium, they lost to the Trinbago Knight Riders by four wickets. Shimron Hetmyer’s 44-ball 63 went in vain. They will now be facing the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots at the same venue in the second of Wednesday’s doubleheader.

The Warriors have mostly dominated the Patriots having a lead of 8-2 on head-to-head count. Having won four games in a row, they will be looking to extend their winning streak. The Patriots, on the other hand, didn’t make a great start either. Defending champions Barbados Tridents beat them by six runs. Both teams will be keen to get their campaign going with a victory after the initial losses.

Pitch and Conditions

The pitch at the venue assisted the spinners in the day game. But at night due to the presence of dew, they weren’t getting that much bite off the surface. Yet, batting first should be the way forward as the chasing teams haven’t had it easy thus far. The conditions are expected to be a tad cloudy with chances of rain. The temperature will be around the 29 degrees Celsius mark.

Apart from Hetmyer and Ross Taylor, the other Warriors’ batters strained against the Knight Riders. Brandon King, the leading run-scorer of CPL 2019, got out on a duck and will be looking to make amends. Nicholas Pooran also faced quite a bit of travails, though he hit two fours and a six.

They strained against Sunil Narine and need to be wary against Ish Sodhi in the Patriots. Skipper Chris Green and Romario Shepherd need to find their rhythm after leaking runs at an economy over 10. Imran Tahir was also expensive, though he picked the wickets of Narine and Kieron Pollard.

The Patriots batters scored runs in their opening game, but most of them failed to press the accelerator in the hour of need. Joshua Da Silva got 41, but at a run-a-ball. Evin Lewis got 12 at a strike-rate of 66.67 and even Chris Lynn, known for his power-hitting, couldn’t quite step up.

Ben Dunk was the only positive as he got a 21-ball 34. Sohail Tanvir might get a promotion after his 10-ball 16 at the death. Tanvir was also impressive with the ball, picking two wickets at an economy of 6.20. Sheldon Cottrell and Rayad Emrit picked up four wickets conceding 32 runs in eight overs.
