India will square off against Bangladesh in the second ODI with the series on the line, following a disappointing loss in a thrilling series opener. The Indian bowlers put up a valiant fight in the match, defending a below-par total on a sluggish surface at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Sunday.
However, it was India's batting that let them down, especially the star-studded top order. If it wasn't for Kl Rahul's fluent half-century, India would've been bundled out for an embarrassing total in the first ODI. The inexperience of the young Indian bowling line-up showed at the fag end of the thrilling contest as Bangladesh held their nerve to pull off a memorable heist.
Let’s have a look at India’s Predicted XI for the second ODI against Bangladesh
Openers: Rohit Sharma (c) and Shikhar Dhawan
Rohit Sharma's struggles at the top of the innings in white-ball cricket was prolonged after he fell prey to the guile of veteran Shakib Al Hasan in the first ODI. He was cleaned up by the former Bangladesh skipper, failing to capitalize on a brisk start.
His opening partner Shikhar Dhawan did not cover himself into glory either, playing a languid shot to see his stumps rattled in an unfortunate dismissal. He will be looking forward to making amends in the decisive second ODI.
Middle-Order: Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk)
India's batting superstar Virat Kohli did not do much wrong with the bat as he was on the receiving end of a spectacular grab by Bangladeshi skipper Litton Das. However, the former Indian skipper grabbed a blinder of his own to exact revenge on Shakib Al Hasan. Given his tenacity and desire to do well for the team, Kohli will be itching to take the field ahead of the second ODI.
Shreyas Iyer's glaring weakness against short deliveries was once again on display in the series opener against Bangladesh after his tame dismissal. Iyer has been in terrific touch in the 50-over format but will have to address his susceptibility to short deliveries if he wishes to cement his place in the Indian team for next year's World Cup.
KL Rahul donned the wicketkeeping gloves in the absence of Rishabh Pant in the first ODI. While his heroics with the bat propelled India to a fighting score, it was his drop in the death overs that ultimately cost India the match.
All-Rounders: Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Shardul Thakur
Washington Sundar was one of India's best bowlers in the first ODI, as his control with the ball troubled the Bangladeshi batters throughout the innings. However, he bowled just five of his ten overs, in a puzzling move by skipper Rohit Sharma.
Young Indian all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed did not have the best of outings in the first ODI against Bangladesh as he was dismissed for a four-ball duck while batting and returned wicketless on a surface that had visible assistance for the slower bowlers.
Shardul Thakur was another Indian bowler who kept things tight in the series opener and was a bit unlucky to not pick more than just one wicket in the match. Thakur returned with impressive figures of 1/21 in his nine overs.
Bowlers: Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Sen
Defending a lowly 186 runs on the board, Deepak Chahar produced the dream start for the Men in Blue after dismissing Bangladeshi opener Najmul Hossain Shanto on the very first delivery of the second innings. However, he wasn't able to contribute with more wickets in the match and finished with 1/32 in his eight overs.
India's best bowler in the first ODI, Mohammed Siraj, bowled his heart out against the home side. The right arm quick was at his terrifying best, scalping 3/32 in his ten overs. He is slowly becoming an integral part of the Indian pace attack in the absence of several senior players and is in contention for a place in the WC squad.
Kuldeep Sen had a mixed outing for the Indian side on his international debut as the tall pacer grabbed two wickets in the match, but leaked too many boundaries to release the pressure on the Bangladeshi batters. Still in his nascent career, Sen will be adamant about improving in the upcoming second ODI.
India Predicted XI: Rohit Sharma (c), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Washington Sundar, Axar Patel/Shahbaz Ahmed, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Sen
