Since being appointed head coach of the Indian cricket team in 2024, Gautam Gambhir has overseen several major multi-nation tournaments, including the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the Asia Cup 2025, both of which India won. Under his leadership, the Indians have remained unbeaten in the shortest format of the game since the 44-year-old took over.

However, the team has faced significant setbacks in Tests and ODIs, suffering some heavy series defeats that have raised concerns among fans and experts. So far, India has lost three Test series and three ODI series under Gambhir’s coaching. After the Men in Blue's recent series loss to New Zealand in the three-match series, CricTracker has a look at all the series they have lost under his stewardship.

In home conditions, India has lost two Test series and one ODI series. The first major setback came against New Zealand in 2024, when India was whitewashed 3-0, losing Tests in Bengaluru, Pune, and Mumbai. More recently, India lost a two-match Test series against South Africa, with defeats in Kolkata and Guwahati, marking a significant low point in India’s red-ball performance.

In white-ball cricket, India lost a three-match ODI series 2-1 to New Zealand in 2026, suffering defeats in Rajkot and Indore, allowing the Kiwis to claim a series victory on Indian soil after several years.

India’s struggles on overseas tours have also been notable. The team lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia in the 2024-25 season, going down 3-1 and managing only a solitary win in Perth. In another tour for the white-ball series, India lost the ODI leg against Australia 2-1, winning just one match in Sydney despite having experienced players in the squad. Gambhir’s first assignment as coach was an ODI series against Sri Lanka in 2024, where India lost 2-0, setting a big precedent for future overseas performances.

ODI Sri Lanka 2-0 2024
Test Australia 3-1 2024-25
