3 Opening combinations India can try before the ODI World Cup 2023

With India playing an awful lot of cricket in the lead-up to the ODI World Cup 2023, it might not be possible for Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan to play each and every game.

1. KL Rahul and Prithvi Shaw

KL Rahul has been India’s premier opener in T20Is and Tests. However, with Dhawan partnering with Rohit in the 50-overs format, Rahul has been required to slot in at the middle order. However, given the 30-year-old has been prolific with the bat at the opening slot across formats, he could play as an opener in some of the ODIs in the build-up to the 2023 World Cup.

Though Rahul has been a run-bank, the flamboyant batter is known to take time to get into the groove and India would want an aggressive batter to partner with him at the top. Therefore, the think tank could look at someone like Prithvi Shaw.

Shaw is a no-nonsense cricketer and takes bowling attacks to the cleaners right from ball one. He has dismantled top-quality bowling line-ups with his strokeplay in the Indian Premier League and also the international arena. The 23-year-old has been in a rich vein of form of late and smashed 332 runs in 10 games played at the recently culminated Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022 at a staggering strike rate of 181.42. Thus, Shaw will form a great foil to Rahul and the duo can work wonders together on the cricket field.
