After lifting the IPL 2024 trophy, Kolkata Knight Riders had a poor 2025 campaign, finishing eighth on the points table with just five wins in 14 matches. With several players underperforming throughout the season, the three-time champions might opt for a squad overhaul ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction. The absence of Shreyas Iyer, who had been a solid leader and reliable middle-order batter, made a huge difference. His replacement, Ajinkya Rahane, couldn’t replicate Iyer’s success. The likes of Sunil Narine and Andre Russell struggled to make meaningful contributions, while their overseas picks failed to deliver. However, the southpaw couldn’t deliver the way his franchise hoped for, managing only 152 runs in eight matches at an average of 21.71 and a strike rate of 129.91. Despite having immense international and franchise cricket experience, De Kock struggled to adapt to KKR’s setup and lost his place midway through the season. With the team eyeing different opening options, the management may consider releasing him to free up an overseas slot and funds ahead of the next auction. De Kock’s return to international cricket for South Africa’s upcoming Pakistan tour may see him get a new franchise, but after a disappointing IPL 2025, his future with KKR looks difficult. Seen as a like-for-like replacement for Mitchell Starc, who played an important role in KKR’s 2024 title-winning campaign, Johnson struggled to replicate the same impact. The left-arm quick managed just one wicket in four matches, conceding runs at an economy of 11.73 before being sidelined due to a back injury. Previously, he had also taken only five wickets in nine games for the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024. With KKR looking to balance their purse for the 2026 mini auction, the franchise is likely to release the Australian pacer. Venkatesh Iyer Venkatesh Iyer. (Source - Getty Images) Despite being one of the most talked-about signings in the IPL 2025 mega auction, Venkatesh Iyer could be released by the Kolkata Knight Riders. Acquired for a record-breaking INR 23.75 crore, the all-rounder was expected to be the backbone of KKR’s middle order and play a critical part in the leadership role. However, he scored just 142 runs in 11 matches at an average of 20.28. After winning the title in 2024, KKR had a forgettable 2025 campaign, finishing eighth in the standings. Iyer’s inconsistent form and inability to make an impact with the bat or ball were among the major concerns. Given the high salary cap, releasing Iyer could free up nearly INR 24 crore, allowing KKR to invest in two or more quality players. However, the franchise may still look to re-acquire him at a lower price at the mini-auction.
