Global sporting teams that ended their trophy drought in 2025 like RCB

The 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League belonged to Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the end. Their dominant group-stage run translated seamlessly in the knockouts which ended in utter joy as the franchise ended their 18-season trophy drought in some style.

With nine wins, four losses, and one no-result, RCB ended their round-robin stage on 19 points by finishing second on the points table. They were level on points with Punjab Kings, with net run rate serving as the primary differentiator.

It wasn't just RCB in IPL 2025, there were other sporting teams around the world which also celebrated their maiden title victories. Interestingly, this year turned out to be the year of long-awaited victories for teams that had struggled to win their respective tournaments.

1. Paris Saint-Germain (first-ever UEFA Champions League)

Paris Saint-Germain attained their inaugural UEFA Champions League triumph in the 2024-25 edition of the prestigious European club competition. They became only the second French club to win the UCL after routing Inter Milan by a whopping 5-0 margin.

2. Tottenham Hotspur (first major trophy in 17 years)

Tottenham Hotspur put up a spirited display against Manchester United in the final of the 2024-25 installment of the UEFA Europa League to defeat them 1-0 to secure their first silverware since 2008. Despite an eventual 17th place finish in the Premier League, they tasted fine success in the UEL.

3. Bologna (first major trophy in 51 years)

Bologna got the better of favourites AC Milan to run away with a 1-0 win to notch up a famous win in the final of the Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) to lift their first piece of silverware in 51 years. It was the first major honour for Bologna's manager too.

4. Newcastle United (first major trophy in 70 years)

Newcastle United ensured a 2-1 win over Liverpool in the final of the 2024-25 EFL Cup at the Wembley Stadium to land their first major trophy in more than half a century. To top it off, they also secured a spot in the UCL by finishing fifth in the Premier League.

5. Crystal Palace (first major trophy after 119 years)

Crystal Palace were resolute in shaping up their defence against a star-studded Manchester City to hang onto the one goal they scored early on in the final of the 2024-25 FA Cup final at the same venue at which Newcastle United scripted history.
