Shikhar Dhawan played only two games in the competition as he got ruled out of the competition due to a thumb injury. The southpaw looked confident with his bat scoring 125 runs in two matches at a strike rate of 103.30. In the important match against Australia at the Oval, Dhawan stepped up and played a spunky knock of 117 runs off just 109 deliveries.

Riding on his fine knock, India beat the five-time champions by a comfortable margin of 36 runs. The left-handed batter also received the Player of the Match award for his excellent innings. During the match against the Aussies, the dashing opener fractured his thumb while facing a delivery from Nathan Coulter-Nile.

The veteran was expected to make a comeback in the playing XI before the knockout round but before the Afghanistan game, it was announced that he would leave the camp and Rishabh Pant would replace him in the remainder of the competition. Dhawan failed to break into the 2023 World Cup squad due to his declining performance in the international circuit.
