Mayank Agarwal was one of the biggest picks at the 2023 auction as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) signed him at INR 8.25 crore. The sensational opening batter has smashed 2,327 runs in 113 IPL games at a strike rate of 134.28. Banking on these figures and his batting potential, the franchise has trusted him to serve the team as an opening batter. However, the 31-year-old, struggled with the bat in the last edition of the tournament scoring only 196 runs for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in 13 matches at a strike rate of 122.50.

After receiving these disappointing numbers from him, PBKS parted ways with him before the mini-auction in Kerala. This year, he will have to deliver his best to the franchise and justify his amount. At the auction last month, the franchise could’ve trusted some faces instead of Agarwal as they were better than him in this domestic season.

Here are three players SRH should’ve signed instead of Mayank Agarwal

3. Ajinkya Rahane

In the last IPL edition, Ajinkya Rahane played for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and scored only 133 runs in seven games at a dismal strike rate of 103.91. With these numbers, he couldn’t make it to the retention list of the franchise and went under the hammer for another time.

Trusting his glorifying past in the league, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) signed him at his base price of INR 50 lakh. This season, the franchise could assign him the responsibility to open the innings in the competition. So far, the 34-year-old has scored 4,074 runs in 158 matches at a strike rate of 120.68 in 14 IPL editions.

For the SRH, Rahane could’ve become a reasonable buy as he could’ve led the franchise in the upcoming season. In 2018, the veteran captained Rajasthan Royals (RR) and took the franchise to the playoffs. Compared to Mayank Agarwal, who was one of the most expensive buys of SRH in the auction, Rahane is more experienced and has also done better in the ongoing domestic season. In the ongoing Ranji Trophy, he regained his form hitting 585 runs in nine innings of six matches with two centuries and a fifty.
