IPL 2023: 5 players who kept their base price too low

The IPL auction 2023 is all set to take place on December 23 in Kochi and 991 players have registered themselves for the marquee event. However, with a squad limit of 25 players, only a maximum of 87 cricketers can earn contracts from the franchises, of which 30 could be overseas.

Like all previous auctions, players have been allowed to set their base prices for the upcoming marquee event. The superstars of the game such as Sam Curran and Ben Stokes and 19 others have kept themselves in the highest bracket of INR 2 crore. While most top-drawer players have kept their bases price as per expectations, there are a few T20 stars who have underpriced themselves.

Here are five players who have kept a low base price for the IPL 2023 auction:

5. Ajinkya Rahane

Kolkata Knight Riders roped in Ajinkya Rahane to provide solidity at the top of the order. However, the 34-year-old failed to make a mark with his performances and could manage only 133 runs in seven games at a strike rate of 103.91. Following the ace batter’s awful outings, KKR released him from their squad ahead of the upcoming player auction.

Rahane has decided to enter the IPL 2023 auction with a base price of INR 50 lakh. Though the ace batter failed to set the IPL arena ablaze last season, he has been a proven performer in the cash-rich league since its inaugural edition in 2008. The Indian batter has featured in 158 matches and amassed 4074 runs at a strike rate of 120.68. 

Therefore, given Rahane’s stature in the lucrative T20 tournament, INR 50 lakh seems to be a bit too low a base price for him. The Maharashtra-born kept his base price at INR 1 crore at the 2022 mega auction and he could have stayed with the same for the upcoming auction.
