The second week of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) witnessed the domination of batters. In just 17 games, the competition recorded 300 maximums which is the most in the first 17 contests of any IPL edition. Before this sensational record, the game between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) also grabbed the eyeballs as the latter scored 272 runs in 20 overs and erected the second-highest team total in the league.

In the last contest of the second week, Punjab Kings (PBKS) chased down 200 runs against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium, riding on Shashank Singh’s unbeaten 61 off just 29. With this success, Punjab became the team with the most successful 200-plus scores chased in the league. It was the sixth time PBKS succeeded in pulling off 200+ targets. Following the spectacular action in the competition, let’s rate all sides’ batting performances in the second week.

Here are the ratings of all teams’ batting performances in the second week -

10. Mumbai Indians (MI)- 4/10

In the second week, Mumbai Indians (MI) continued to struggle as they couldn’t open their account following their six-wicket defeat against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Wankhede Stadium. Their batters’ responsibility was to stand tall against RR’s bowling attack but in the crucial game, their batting unit failed to face the heat and finished on 125. Rohit Sharma, Naman Dhir, and Dewald Brevis couldn’t score in double digits while Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, and Tim David also disappointed their supporters. Hardik Pandya played some fine strokes but couldn’t stabilise the side.

9. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)- 4.5/10

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) faced severe criticism after losing both their games in the week. Against the Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, they recorded heavy defeats and their batting looked inconsistent. Their key batters Faf du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell, and Cameron Green failed to be impactful.

8. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)- 5/10

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batters did a stunning job in their first two games of the competition but in the second week, when they locked horns with GT at the Narendra Modi Stadium, they lacked discipline. Batting first, the Orange Army scored only 162 runs in 20 overs and their main batters failed to shine. Mayank Agarwal’s struggle continued while Travis Head also fell after scoring just 19 off 14. Aiden Markram also looked nervous as he accumulated only 17 runs after facing 19 balls. The average total wasn’t enough for SRH bowlers as they failed to defend it and GT registered a convincing seven-wicket win with five balls to spare.

7. Rajasthan Royals (RR)- 6/10

RR won their only game against MI at the Wankhede Stadium by six wickets but their top-order batters continued their flop show. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jos Buttler, and Sanju Samson threw their wickets cheaply. Riyan Parag again stepped up and took the team home with his unbeaten 54-run knock off just 39 balls.

6. Chennai Super Kings (CSK)- 6.5/10

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won their first two games of the competition and in both triumphs, their batters displayed their spunk. Both their victories came at their backyard MA Chidambaram Stadium. Contesting against DC in Visakhapatnam, the Yellow Army was handed their maiden defeat of the competition.

On the quality batting turf, Delhi posted 191 runs on the board. Following the massive score, the defending champions lost Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra early. Daryl Mitchell stood at the crease but looked defensive. Ajinkya Rahane was doing well under pressure but he also fell after piling up 45 runs off 30 deliveries.

Shivam Dube and Sameer Rizvi failed to hold their nerves and left the team in crisis. Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni entertained CSK fans with some elegant strokes in the final overs of the game but in the end, that wasn’t enough for Chennai to cross the line.

5. Punjab Kings (PBKS)- 7/10

Punjab Kings (PBKS) have returned to winning ways after pocketing a three-wicket victory against GT in Ahmedabad. However, their batting again lacked discipline. In the 21-run loss against LSG, captain Shikhar Dhawan and Jonny Bairstow stitched a solid 102-run partnership off just 70 balls but the momentum couldn’t be maintained by middle-order batters which led them to the defeat eventually.

Against the Titans in Ahmedabad, Punjab tasted success but there was a point in the game when the visitors were on the verge of another defeat after losing five wickets at a score of 111. It was Shashank Singh’s extraordinary batting effort that helped the Kings emerge victorious.

4. Delhi Capitals (DC) - 7/10

Delhi exuded confidence with their comfortable 20-run win against CSK in Visakhapatnam. Their batters made a vital contribution to their maiden win. Skipper Rishabh Pant, David Warner, and Prithvi Shaw had a blast with their bats and helped the Capitals post 191 runs on the board

After hammering the defending champions, the Capitals clashed with KKR and recorded their second-biggest defeat in the history of the league. Chasing 273 runs against Kolkata, DC could score only 166 in 17.2 overs. Delhi’s batting mainstays Warner, Shaw, and Mitchell Marsh return to the pavilion early. Pant and Tristan Stubbs produced swift knocks but their efforts couldn’t bring their side back into the game as the total they were following was enormous.

3. Gujarat Titans (GT)- 8 /10

Gujarat concluded their week with a three-wicket loss against Punjab in Ahmedabad but their batting looked stunning. Shubman Gill led from the front and hit an unbeaten 89 off 48. Sai Sudharsan also played a rapid knock of 33 off 19. Earlier against SRH at the Narendra Modi Stadium, GT batters complemented their bowlers and completed the chase of 163 successfully. David Miller played a match-finishing knock of an unbeaten 44 off 27 and took GT home.

In the second week, the KL Rahul-led LSG won their two contests comfortably. They clinched a 21-run win against Punjab and Quinton de Kock chipped in with 54 off 38. Nicholas Pooran displayed his batting mettle and racked up 42 off just 21. Following the triumph against Punjab, the Super Giants crushed RCB by 28 runs in their backyard. De Kock continued his brilliant form and played an 81-run innings in just 56 balls. Pooran also racked up 40 runs off just 21 balls.

KKR were seen in red-hot form in the second week after beating RCB and DC. The factor that won them both matches was Sunil Narine, who wreaked havoc on both sides with bat and ball. Against RCB at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Kolkata pulled off 183 runs in just 16.5 overs. Narine smashed 47 off 22 and became the Player of the Match. Venkatesh Iyer also played an impressive knock of 50 off just 30.

Against DC in Visakhapatnam, the two-time champions scored their highest team total of 272. Narine took Delhi’s bowling attack to the cleaners and hit 85 off just 39. Angkrish Raghuvanshi made his debut memorable with a half-century. Andre Russell also scored 41 runs off just 19 balls.
