What is the penalty for an on-field physical brawl in cricket?

India’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi found himself at the centre of controversy during the India A vs Sri Lanka A match in the ongoing Tri-Nation A Series 2026 in Sri Lanka.

The incident took place at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium after Sri Lanka A clinched victory over India A in a thrilling Super-Over finish. Following the match, tensions flared when Sri Lanka A player Vishen Halambage reportedly directed a remark towards Sooryavanshi. The young Indian batter reacted immediately, leading to a heated confrontation between the two players.

The situation briefly escalated into a physical altercation before the senior Lankan wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella intervened and separated the duo. The incident quickly became a major talking point among fans, raising questions about whether Sooryavanshi could face disciplinary action.

What does the ICC Code of Conduct say?

According to Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, any inappropriate physical contact with a player, support staff member, umpire, match referee, or any other individual during an international match is prohibited. The ICC evaluates such incidents based on factors including whether the contact was deliberate or reckless, the force involved, and the consequences of the action.

For player-to-player physical contact, the offence can be classified as either a Level 1 or Level 2 breach, depending on the seriousness of the incident. A Level 1 offence can attract a warning or a fine of up to 50 per cent of the match fee, while a Level 2 offence can result in a fine ranging from 50 to 100 per cent of the match fee and/or up to two suspension points.

Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi face any punishment?

Had the altercation occurred in a match governed by the ICC’s playing conditions, Sooryavanshi’s actions could potentially have been viewed as a Level 2 offence, exposing him to a significant financial penalty and possible suspension points.

However, the teenage batter is unlikely to face any ICC punishment. The India A-Sri Lanka A fixture was not conducted under ICC playing conditions and therefore does not fall under the disciplinary framework related thereto. As a result, the Code of Conduct provisions relating to international matches are not applicable in this case.

While the confrontation attracted considerable attention, Sooryavanshi is expected to avoid official sanctions and will now look to move on from the incident as the Indian contingent continues the campaign in the Tri-Nation A series.
