WPL 2023: Top 5 moments from tournament

The inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 saw the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians clinch the title after defeating Delhi Capitals in the final showdown of the tournament. The first season of the tournament completely lived up to its billing as it showcased some memorable moments produced by the best of the best in women’s cricket. Following the conclusion of the competition, let us have a look at the top five moments from the inaugural WPL. 5. Grace Harris’ masterclass against Gujarat Giants Undoubtedly, one of the best moments from the tournament came when UP Warriorz took on Gujarat Giants in the third match of the competition. Batting first, the Sneh Rana-led Gujarat looked to register their first win of the WPL, and they did put up a decent score on the board, scoring 169 runs. They followed it up with an exemplary start to the second innings, as both of Warriorz’ openers were sent back to the pavilion quite early on. Kiran Navgire fought back and scored 53 runs to give the side some hope, but things went from bad to worse after Tahlia McGrath and Deepti Sharma were unable to post some runs on the board as well. As all seemed lost for UP Warriorz, Grace Harris came in to bat and played a knock for the ages. The 29-year-old Australian all-rounder scored 59*(26) to propel her struggling side to an emphatic victory. 4. Tara Norris’ fifer American pacer Tara Norris made history as she was roped in by Delhi Capitals for the base price of INR 10 lakh. The 24-year-old showed why she was so talked about ahead of the start of the tournament when Delhi took on Royal Challengers Bangalore in the second game of the WPL. Delhi set up a mammoth target of 224 runs for Bangalore to chase thanks to fabulous knocks by Shafali Verma, Meg Lanning, and Marizanne Kapp. As Bangalore came in to bat, the star-studded side looked to register their first victory of the season, but Tara Norris had other plans in mind. The American pacer was key for Delhi as she bowled a magnificent spell to hinder the plans of RCB. Norris took the first fifer of the competition and conceded just 29 runs in the four overs she bowled, making her mark in the tournament. 3. Marizanne Kapp’s spell against Gujarat Giants Yet another magnificent spell that came at the expense of Gujarat Giants, when Delhi Capitals faced the Sneh Rana-led side in the ninth match of the competition. Gujarat won the toss and elected to bat, and that is where Delhi established their dominance. In the first innings, Gujarat were against a ruthless bowling attack of Delhi, and the already-struggling side faced a collapse after fabulous spells from Shikha Pandey, Radha Yadav, and Marizanne Kapp. Shikha and Radha took three and one wicket each to disrupt Gujarat’s plans, but it was the spell of Marizanne Kapp that was integral for Delhi. The 33-year-old took a fifer and conceded just 15 runs, as Delhi won the game by 10 wickets. 2. Sophie Devine’s 99 Arguably one of the best knocks of the tournament came from Sophie Devine when Royal Challengers Bangalore faced Gujarat Giants in the 16th match of the WPL 2023. Both teams were struggling in the competition and were desperate to register a win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Batting first, Gujarat put in an excellent batting performance as they posted 188 runs on the board, thanks to fabulous knocks from Laura Wolvaardt and Ashleigh Gardner. As Bangalore came in to bat, opener Sophie Devine played one of the best knocks of the tournament as the 33-year-old accumulated 99 runs in just 36 balls to propel her side to a much-needed victory. 1. Issy Wong’s hat-trick The first and only hat-trick of the inaugural WPL season came in Issy Wong’s fabulous spell against the UP Warriorz in the Eliminator of the competition. Mumbai Indians took on Warriorz in the crucial game, and batting first, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side managed to post 182 runs on the board in the first innings as they were desperate to make it to the final showdown of the competition. As Warriorz came in to bat, the side was bundled out for just 110 runs, and the 20-year-old Issy Wong’s spell was key to Mumbai's victory. Wong took the first hat-trick of the tournament, dismissing set batter Kiran Navgire, Sophie Ecclestone, and Simran Shaikh in quick succession. She finished the game with four wickets to her name and conceded just 15 runs.
