Ellyse Perry further cemented her status as one of the all-time great batters in women's Tests by playing a sublime knock of 99 runs in the first innings. She played a chanceless innings before hitting the ball straight into the hands of Natalie Sciver-Brunt at gully to miss a well-deserved century by just one run.

A century would have made Perry just the second Australian woman to score three Ashes Test centuries. Only the legendary Betty Wilson has achieved the feat so far. With regular skipper and star batter Meg Lanning out of the game, Perry was promoted to number three in the batting order and she did not disappoint.

The right-handed batter, who has an average of 73 in Tests, shared a crucial 119-run stand with Tahlia McGrath to set the foundation for Australia's first innings total of 473 runs. In the second innings, Perry scored 25 in addition to picking up one wicket in the first innings.
