Shreyas Iyer, Winning Skipper, speaks post game

(On close games like these) It takes a lot off your body and drains you out completely because you go through so many emotions. Itā€™s tough to stay calm but Iā€™m elated. We got two points on the board and thatā€™s all that matters. Itā€™s extremely tough when the pressure is on, I feel that every individual should put their hands up and take the responsibility. Russell did that by picking up two wickets and completely changed the game in our favor, that kind of attitude is needed in the team. Itā€™s a funny game, when you need 18 runs off 6 balls, the pressure is on the bowler. One six here and there, it completely changes the momentum. It is important that we maintain our calmness and stay in the present and make the batter hit where you want them to hit. We need to stick to our routines and processes and see to it that we execute the things we want. It was a pivotal knock, I wanted to stay till the end and steady the ship. We were losing wickets and I wanted to stay till the end and see it off. We got some important boundaries towards the end and I was very happy about that.

Player of the Match is Andre Russell

Here's what the Player of the Match, Andre Russell, said after the game:

I always back my bowling. Getting the ball in a crucial time, I know I have to come good. Happy for the two points. When I was batting earlier, change-ups was difficult to hit. As a bowler, that is what I tried - length ball, slower cutters, it was gripping on the surface. I was happy to get the two set batters out and that's what changed the game. When I look at the bowling equation, Harshith had one, Starcy had one, I had two. So my aim was to bowl an important over and give Starcy as much to defend. I was looking to bowl six deliveries at DK and mixing up with the short ones and slower ones. Worked well tonight.

Here's what Harshit Rana said after the match

[On his last over] The plan was from before. The wicket was good to bat if there was pace on the ball. So our plan was to take pace off. Whenever I have the ball in hand, I get a bit nervous. But i try to keep my cool and think about my execution. The talk was about taking pace off [towards the end]. Dre bowled well, Sunny also bowled well

Losing skipper, Faf du Plessis speaks post match

It was crazy. Rules are rules, Virat and myself in that space thought the ball was higher than his waist. You always find one team happy and the other not so with such decisions. With a target like 220, takes a hell of a lot to get there. When you haven't won for a while, just that clarity. Narine's over was the turning point for me. We feel like the game is changing. We don't feel like there is time to get in. Guys who take 7-8 balls to get in, it feels like the game does not allow you to do that anymore. It is tough. You just play the match-up with Narine, he is such a quality bowler. If you are winning games and get the confidence of getting the team over the line, you take such decisions. I am proud of the boys, a lot of fight out there. We though the total was chaseable and thought it was a par score. You have to maximise the powerplay, and be okay with losing two or three wickets. We are as desperate. That's why I am saying I am proud. Guys put their bodies on the line. We are just as desperate to get back to winning ways. We have an unbelievable fan base. The RCB chant is the loudest. Desperately want to make our fans proud.

KKR win a thriller

The batters went for the second run, as Salt has done some excellent glovework. KKR win by 1 run at the Eden Gardens and the camp is pumping in joy. RCB lose by the barest of margins. What a game of cricket this has been!

A lot of drama and a perfect Sunday for the cricket fans. Such a nail-biter game. Perfect movie script for a blockbuster (No Pun Intended). A complete Box Office delight for the fans at Eden Gardens.

FALLBACK
Loading...

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) had a terrific start to their IPL 2024 campaign and will next challenge their biggest rivals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 21 at the iconic Eden Gardens. Earlier in the season, KKR picked up a comfortable victory over the Faf du Plessis-led side, and if the hosts manage to repeat that, they will strengthen their position on the points table.

RCB, on the other hand, have had a very rough season so far, as they are currently at the bottom of the points table. Barring Virat Kohli and Dinesh Karthik, every cricketer has struggled massively and most of them are yet to find form. They have tried various combinations to get back to winning ways, but nothing has worked so far, which is heavily concerning, as their hope of qualifying for the playoffs is slowly diminishing.

Meanwhile, KKR suffered a heartbreaking loss in their last game against Rajasthan Royals. However, there were multiple positives as Sunil Narine scored his maiden century while Varun Chakravarthy had a splendid outing. Nevertheless, the two-time champions need to address their middle order, which has underperformed so far. The duo of Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer have failed to deliver consistently, which the team needs to address. Bringing back Nitish Rana to the playing XI can be one of the possible options. The focus will also be on Mitchell Starc, who once again leaked 50 runs in four overs against RR.

Probable Playing XI of KKR and RCB:

Kolkata Knight Riders - Philip Salt (wk), Sunil Narine, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Shreyas Iyer (c), Venkatesh Iyer, Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, Ramandeep Singh, Mitchell Starc, Varun Chakaravarthy, Harshit Rana

Royal Challengers Bengaluru - Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis (c), Will Jacks, Rajat Patidar, Saurav Chauhan, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Mahipal Lomror, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Reece Topley, Lockie Ferguson, Yash Dayal
